LUDLOW - Selectman William Rooney said monthly crime reports from the Police Department show that breaks into cars and buildings were high in May.

"There were 25 breaks into automobiles and nine into buildings," Rooney said.

Police Chief Paul Madera said that during a period last winter there were 50 car breaks, and then arrests were made.

"We made arrests in May, and then the numbers dropped," Madera said.

Madera said that effective enforcement "pushes the crime to other communities."

Madera said the Police Department is getting "more and more calls from residents" reporting crime.

Since some new police officers have been hired and trained, the Police Department has had the manpower to make more DUI (driving under the influence) of alcohol or drugs arrests, Madera said.

"People are reporting breaks," Madera said. He added that sometimes in the warm weather crime, including break and entries, spikes.

Madera said many residents are installing home security systems, but if they are not installed properly, they may be too sensitive and trigger false alarms.
