Emmys 2012: Steven Levitan talks about his ‘Modern Family’ win
“Modern Family” co-creator Steven Levitan admitted backstage he was a bit surprised to win the Emmy for comedy series directing.
“My money was on ‘Palestinian Chicken,’ to tell you the truth,” Levitan said, referring to the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episode he was up against. “Those were incredible co-nominees in the category.”
Levitan had previously won Emmys for writing “Modern Family.” He voiced his appreciation to the crew for “protecting” him while directing.

“I’m praying that everybody doesn’t get sick of us,” Levitan says of “Modern Family’s” three-year run of success at the Emmys.
When one reporter noted the number of new shows this fall season featuring gay or lesbian characters, Levitan said he was proud that his show might have played a small part in “giving people permission to write about this subject.”
“I think every time there’s a show like ‘Modern Family’ or ‘Will & Grace’ that portray gay and lesbian characters and is successful, it just further opens the door,” Levitan said. “Certainly there are a lot of people in town with a vested interest in the subject, and that makes for better writing.”
