The film, which stars Gabrielle Union and Regina Hall, took an impressive $33m over the weekend to take the top slot.

It is inspired by the self-help book Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man by Steve Harvey – with a plot which sees four hapless men trying to get their own back on the women in their lives after they turn to the book for help with their relationships.

The success of the movie, which cost only $13m to make, has taken distributor Sony by surprise with its weekend total – making back most of its budget on its opening day alone.

‘It was a wild ride, it just got better and better as the night went on Friday,’ said the company’s distribution chief Rory Bruer.

Meanwhile Zac Efron’s latest film The Lucky One, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, entered the chart at number two with $22.8m.

The film, a romantic drama, stars Efron as an Iraq war veteran who goes in search of the mystery woman he believes was his good luck charm during the conflict.

The Hunger Games finished in third place with $14.5m, bringing its total US box office to $356.9m.

The futuristic thriller, which stars Jennifer Lawrence, is the first film to top the US charts for four weeks since James Cameron’s Avatar in 2009 – and to date has made over half a billion dollars worldwide.

Disney’s latest nature documentary Chimpanzee, which made $10.2m, and Farrelly Brothers comedy The Three Stooges, with a gross of $9.2m, completed the top five.
