amazonsignageWill the .spot domain ever catch on? Amazon is betting on it.

The Seattle online giant outbid Google on Wednesday in a top-level domain auction, paying $2.2 million for .spot. Per an agreement with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Amazon will now be able to administer the domain and use .spot to further its own products, or potentially sell it to other commerce-conscious folks who want to register websites.

Last month, Amazon again outbid Google for the rights to .buy, paying $4.6 million for that domain.

On a related note, the two companies have recently launched their own domain registration services in a move to get more small businesses started with their own websites.

A few other auctions also ended on Wednesday. Fegristry, run by Seattle-based entrepreneur Jay Westerdal, paid $5.6 million and outbid Bellevue-based Donuts for .realty. Donuts did come out on top for .Salon, though, paying $5.1 million.
