Scholarship Honors Slain Plainfield Mom-to-Be

The Joliet Junior Woman's Club is launching a scholarship in honor of Plainfield-area resident Alisha Bromfield and her unborn daughter, Ava.

The 2013 JJWC Alisha and Ava Bromfield Memorial Scholarship will become an annual scholarship awarded to a young woman graduating high school in the Joliet area and attending any accredited two- or four-year college or university, according to Kim Kalafut of the Junior Woman's Club.

Candidates for the scholarship must demonstrate academic success and make significant volunteer contributions to the community, have a strong character, be well rounded and be in the process of applying to a two- or four-year school.

A graduate of Joliet Catholic Academy, Bromfield was a member of the Juniorette Club. Her mom, Sherry Anicich, is an active member of the Joliet Junior Woman's Club, Kalafut said.

Bromfield, who was more than six months pregnant with the baby girl she'd planned to name Ava Lucille, was killed in August 2012 in Door County, Wisconsin.

A Plainfield man, Brian M. Cooper, is scheduled to go on trial for the double slaying on June 17, according to Fox-11 online.
