The Flaming Lips, The Molly Ringwalds added to concert calendar for Iron City in Birmingham

The Flaming Lips -- a psychedelic rock band that wowed the crowd at Birmingham's 2008 City Stages festival -- and 1980s cover extravaganza The Molly Ringwalds have been added to the agenda at Iron City.

Both will play on the main stage of the Birmingham entertainment complex, 513 22nd St. South. That area holds about 1,300 people.

Here are the details:

The Flaming Lips are booked for Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $50 general admission, on sale Jan. 9 at 11 a.m. through the venue's website.

The Flaming Lips, led by playful mastermind Wayne Coyne, are touring on a 2014 album, "With a Little Help From My Fwends." It's a reinterpretation of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," featuring collaborations with My Morning Jacket, Miley Cyrus, Dr. Dog, Phantogram and other artists.

During their live shows, the band integrates experimental arrangements with trippy special effects, creating a multimedia experience that inspires audience participation.

"In the end, I'm simply doing this for my pleasure," Coyne said during a 2008 interview with The Birmingham News. "If the audience enjoys it, I'm doing two cool things."

The Flaming Lips have three Grammy Awards to their credit, as well as a catalog of 16 studio albums and several EPs. The band has played Birmingham just once, headlining at City Stages, but has appeared several times at the Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores.

This year, the Flaming Lips will play a Feb. 19 date at the Soul Kitchen in Mobile, on the heels of the Birmingham concert.

The Molly Ringwalds are set to perform on March 20 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission, on sale Jan. 9 at 11 a.m., via the Iron City website.

The English quintet takes its name from the red-haired ingenue of '80s hits such as "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club" and "Pretty in Pink." The band combines vivid retro costumes with covers of songs that range from Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf" to the Bangles "Manic Monday."

Setlists pay tribute to acts such as A-Ha, the Cars, the Beastie Boys, Whitesnake, Flock of Seagulls, INXS, Madonna, Rick Springfield, Twisted Sister, Devo and many more.

The Molly Ringwalds, founded in 2003, are now based in New Orleans, according to the band's Facebook page. The group has performed fairly often in the Mobile area, and played at the 2014 Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival in Foley.
