This is the moment a British surfer miraculously escaped with minor injuries after he fell riding one of the world's most notorious waves - which hit him "like a truck".

Daredevil Andrew Cotton, 35, was towed into the water by a jet-ski at big-wave spot Nazare, in Portugal.

The dad-of-two had already successfully ridden a wave in excess of 60ft, but ran into trouble when another crashed right on top of him - hitting him "like a truck".

Somehow, Andrew survived the fall unscathed, but emerged from the depths just seconds before a second wave crashed on him.

He tried to avoid the impact of the second wave, but was submerged once again, with the force of the underwater currents over-extending his right arm.

Andrew, from Braunton, Devon, said: "The wipe-out was intense but not that bad, although I was under for quite a long time, about 15 seconds.

What a ripper! The wave engulfed Andrew as he tried to ride it

"Because I was under so long, I surface behind my safety ski and within seconds faced a 60ft wave which broke directly in front of me.

"There was nothing the safety ski could do. He just couldn't get to me in time. This (second) wave was a lot more violent, almost like being hit by a truck.

"I hyper-extended my right arm underwater, it felt like my arm had been pulled off. I was under for a long time on this one, too.

"Success in big wave surfing is often based on how you deal with wiping out in these life threatening waves."

Andrew is now recovering from his arm injuries, and hopes to be back in the water by mid-December in the hope he can beat the current world record for the biggest wave ever surfed, 78ft - set at Nazare in 2011.

The size of the 60ft plus waves at Nazare, a quiet fishing village near Lisbon, are attributed to an underwater canyon beneath the beach.
