STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis and NYPD officials gave a K-9 Unit presentation Friday to students at St. Clare School, Great Kills.

Students from the school's third-grade class learned about the NYPD's K-9 Unit and its operations. The presentation gave students a look into the training the dog undergo and the role they play in helping officers perform specific duties.

"We were so excited when Assemblywoman Malliotakis offered to bring this demonstration to St. Clare and we're so thankful that our students were able to see it," said Jo Rossicone, principal of St. Clare School. "This community is so very fortunate to have the NYPD keeping us safe, and it's good to know how effective the K-9 Unit can be in getting the job done."

NYPD Officer John Figueroa, Detective Terryl Elder and K-9 Primo led the presentation.

"The NYPD K-9 Unit is fascinating," said Ms. Malliotakis. "The bond and level of trust between the officer and the dog is remarkable, and their value in investigations and crime prevention is undoubted. I hope this demonstration gave the children an understanding of and appreciation for our police officers and their working dogs."

Ms. Malliotakis plans on visiting other schools in her district to educate students about the K-9 Unit in the coming months.
