Nehe Prison is now under close investigation after prisoner Wang Dong blackmailed a policeman's wife for sex on Jan. 21, 2015. Nehe Prison has gained a notorious reputation for gambling, prostitution, suicides and other incidents since the 1990s, according to reports from ifeng.com and The Paper on Jan. 25, 2015.

Nehe Prison, formerly known as Laolai Prison, was originally a penal labor camp where prisoners were required to do heavy farm work, and it was the first modernized provincial-level prison in the province of Heilongjiang in northeast China.

However, it has gained a notorious reputation since the 1990s. Under close investigation, the prison was found to have bought 250 computers in 2006, organizing prisoners to play "World of Warcraft" and other video games to produce revenue. What's more, prison guards' hiring of prostitutes has become an open secret in the prison. According to The Paper, prisoners behave outrageously in cells, gambling, drinking and even cooking. The prison guards are no better, hurting prisoners and even beating them to death, taking hostages. Incidents such as these have been continuously occurring since the 1990s.

Accusations about crimes at Nehe Prison appear to have been posted on online forums as early as 2008. The most notorious one is a report saying that 6 prisoners committed suicide because of "hide and seek" (a euphemism for prison violence) with policemen from March 2008 to March 2009.
