Blair Underwood will be adding some star power to the Old Globe’s annual summer lineup of plays by William Shakespeare.

The actor will appear in the Old Globe’s production of “Othello” scheduled to run June 22 to July 27 at the company’s outdoor stage in San Diego. The official opening night is set for June 28. Old Globe artistic director Barry Edelstein, a veteran of New York’s Public Theater, will direct the production.

Underwood will play the title role in “Othello” opposite the previously announced Richard Thomas as Iago and “House of Cards” actress Kristen Connolly as Desdemona.

This will mark the first time that Underwood has performed at the Old Globe.

In 2012, the actor made his Broadway debut in a revival production of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” He appeared in the Public’s 1993 production of Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure” in New York’s Central Park, which starred Kevin Kline.

Underwood’s many TV credits include the recent “The Trip to Bountiful,” starring Cicely Tyson, that aired on the Lifetime cable channel.
