‘The Final Girls’ Has A Scene That’ll Make You Tear Up, And Horror Movies Aren’t Supposed To Do That [Video]

The Final Girls trailer that hit the web late last week has many people both inside and outside horror movie fandom talking, and not because it’s a great three minutes — it is — but more because of a scene within the trailer itself that packs an emotional wallop.

First, a little setup.

The Final Girls is a comedy first and horror movie second. It features some familiar faces like Taissa Farmiga, Nina Dobrev, Malin Akerman, and Alia Shawkat.

It opens, presumably in theaters, on October 9, 2015 — just in time for Halloween — and it’s a total spoof of campfire slasher flicks like Friday the 13th and The Burning.

But as you’re about to see, this flick doesn’t forget its heart, and that comes with a plot line that, while funny, completely lends itself to poignancy and drama.

According to IMDb, Max (Farmiga) is a teenager coming to terms with the death of her mother, a former 1980s scream queen known primarily for the film Camp Bloodbath, “the granddaddy” of all slasher movies.

Near the anniversary of her mother’s death, Max and friends get the opportunity to revisit Camp Bloodbath 1 and 2 on the big screen. But when a twist of fate puts them in the actual movie, Max gets a chance to reconnect with Mom (Akerman) and team up to stop the killer.

While most of the trailer makes light of dumbly lovable horror movie tropes, there is one scene in particular that makes you realize this isn’t going to be all spoof.

Max and her friends realize they’re in the movie. A van heads toward them and slows to a stop. They’re offered a ride by one of the women from the movie, in character just the way she was in the ’80s.

When they get inside the van, Max is introduced to another character at the back of the van — Nancy, the girl her mother played in the films. Max is overwhelmed to see her mom again and heartbroken when the character doesn’t recognize her.

It’s a brief moment and an intense emotional sell for Farmiga, but she pulls it off with a single look that tells you this movie is more than just a spoof.

You will totally want to see how things turn out by the end of this trailer. Have a look for yourself.

From the look of it, The Final Girls will be a straight theatrical release, so don’t expect it to drop immediately on VOD. It’s rated PG-13 for horror violence, some language, and sexually charged humor.
