A New York appeals court has overturned Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction, the landmark case that popularized the #MeToo movement.

The disgraced Hollywood producer was tried for his past behavior as well as the crimes he was charged with, a key mistake, the appeals court ruled.

The New York State Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that the former movie mogul had not received a fair trial in 2020 that led to a 23-year sentence, and ordered a new trial.

Harvey Weinstein's 2020 conviction​ on felony sex crime charges has been overturned by the State of New York Court of Appeals.

The court found that the judge at the trial prejudiced the ex-movie mogul with improper rulings, including a decision to let women testify about allegations that weren’t part of the case.

In its 4-3 decision, the appeals court found Weinstein's trial judge had erred by allowing outside accuser testimony.
