An Air Force commander in Florida ordered all airmen of the 1st Special Operations Wing step down from their duties Monday to come together and grieve the death of fellow airman Roger Fortson, who was shot and killed in his off-base apartment by a police officer.

The body of Roger Forton, the U.S. airman shot by Florida deputy in his own home was returned to the "arms of his grieving family" in Georgia.

Fortson was holding his legally owned gun when he opened his front door, but it was pointed to the floor. Based on body camera footage released by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, the deputy only commanded Fortson to drop the gun after he shot him.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said in a statement that the airman was on a Facetime call at the time of the encounter.
