CVS Health is laying off nearly 3,000 "primarily corporate roles" in a cost-cutting move, the company confirmed to USA TODAY Tuesday.

CVS Health announced Tuesday the pharmacy chain will lay off nearly 3,000 workers as part of cost-saving efforts, but the job cuts primarily will be in "corporate" positions, the company said.

CVS Health ( NYSE: CVS) will lay off 2,900 employees, under 1% of its workforce, according to Forbes, but it did not confirm reports of the healthcare services provider exploring options to create shareholder value, including a potential breakup.

The cuts are part of a large-scale, $2 billion savings plan unveiled by executives in August. The Woonsocket, Rhode Island-based company expects to terminate 2,900 workers in the coming months, most of whom work in corporate positions nationwide. CVS says the terminations represent 1% of its total workforce.

CVS Health said on Tuesday it would lay off about 2,900 employees, representing less than 1% of its workforce, as the healthcare conglomerate aims to cut costs.

CVS Health announced on Monday that it plans to lay off over 400 employees associated with its Hartford facility. The layoffs are scheduled for December. Aetna, the company’s parent company, announced in a statement that 416 workers will be laid off: 93 on-site workers and 323 remote workers.

The Woonsocket, R.I.-based health care giant said it would cut more than 100 positions in January at its corporate office in Florham Park, according to notice filed with the state Department of Labor & Workforce Development.

The terminations will be happening during a 14-day period starting Dec. 8, CVS Health officials wrote in the notice.
