Prior to 1871, there was but one parish and cemetery to serve the Roman Caholic residents of Yonkers. In May of 1871 the parish of St. Joseph was set off from St. Mary's. As the Catholic population grew, so did the need for additional burial space.

Joseph Cemetery was there to meet the burial needs of all these parishes over the years and this tradition continues today. The Cemetery has always been considered the property of the whole Catholic Community of Pittsfield and is overseen by a Cemetery Commission comprised of members from all four Pittsfield parishes.
