Top Halloween 2011 Trends for Women

Written by Mindy Messenger

What’s on the hot list for Halloween this year? "Angry Birds" crops up in full force, as do super heroines and heroes, nods to retro cartoons, and a blood curdling number of vampires inspired by "Twilight," "True Blood," and even "Fright Night." Snooki and the rest of the "Jersey Shore" gang are kicked to the curb and will most likely be in the sale bins come October—which is good news for those of you needing bump wigs for your Amy Winehouse costumes.

Editor's Picks

Movies & TV

Despite lackluster reviews "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" received, the characters still smash the competition as trendiest costumes in the Movies & TV category. Take your pick from leading lady Angelica (played by Penélope Cruz) or the ladies’ version of Captain Jack Sparrow. Another hot pick from Disney is the skin-tight costume for Quorra of "Tron: Legacy."

"Harry Potter" returns for one last round as a hot trend thanks to this year’s release of the final movie, and characters from "Glee" are still singing strong. While Kermit, Miss Piggy and friends are old mainstays for costume sellers, the "Muppets" movie set to hit theaters November has jumped interest. Also expect to see the mentally disturbed vixens from "Sucker Punch" make a splash at parties hosted by 20- and 30-somethings.

Super Powers

The super hero trend has been going strong and will continue to do so as long as there are super hero movies to be made. Up for top costume nominations this year, you’ll find feminine versions of this year’s men in tights: Captain America, Thor and the Green Lantern.

But why should the boys have all the fun? Cat Woman, and Wonder Woman dash onto the scene with highly-desired costumes inspired by the upcoming movies. Not to be slighted, Batgirl and Supergirl have also captured a surprising amount of interest. Last, but certainly not least, the heroine of the retro cartoon "She-Ra" enters the competition this year and would make a good couple’s costume with He-Man—that is, as long as you don’t mind your sweetie dressing as the Princess of Power’s brother. From other retro cartoons, expect to see a return from last year’s sold-out sexy takes on "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and "Transformers."

Not Just for Kiddies

Seeing as this holiday is technically for the kids, it’s only fitting to honor your inner child with characters from children’s shows both past and present. In case you missed her last year, Rainbow Brite is back with an even skimpier costume this time around. Adult versions of Smurfette surfaced last year, but interest is higher than ever with the new "Smurfs" movie. So far we haven’t seen extremely skimpy versions of the female Smurf, but we expect to see them crop up next year if not this year.

Sanrio’s Kitty White from "Hello Kitty" makes the scene in a short and sassy but adorable dress, while various characters from "Candyland" jump off the board and into the costume racks. Others to not miss are whacky, full-bodied costumes from the surreal "Yo Gabba Gabba" and an adorable, big headed sock monkey.

Let the Music Play

With ‘90s Grunge seeing an uptick in interest, expect to find appropriately inspired costumes kicking around. Or you can dust off your Docs and make your own DIY costume—plaid has been a hot trend the past few years, so you’ll likely find some deeply discounted duds.

With Amy Winehouse’s death in July, and Michael Jackson’s murder trial expected to begin in September, you can be sure to find many tribute costumes for both singers. We’ve even seen a sexy “Billie Jean” costume for women that we expect to sell out quickly this year. Lady Gaga ruled Halloween 2010 and although she’s had few iconic looks this year, expect to see renditions of her creepy "Born This Way" face. Now that the Gaga reign is slipping, Katy Perry has taken hold with a host of peppy and sexy costumes and even Rhianna gets a nod with a costume version of her pale pink bodysuit.
