Tourist Treasure or Tourist Trap? Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy

It's a paradox: Some of the world's most iconic places are so popular that the very act of visiting them threatens their survival. Overcrowding, pollution, overdevelopment and commercialism all combine to make some must-see tourist attractions feel more like tourist traps.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is so famous that tourists go out of their way to visit this central Italy town. The popularity of the tower has made the roads and walkways leading up to it a gantlet of tacky souvenirs and overpriced food. And now that you can climb up into the 12th-century tower, even more travelers are coming here, so be sure to pack your patience before you visit.

It's a shame that the tower gets all the attention, since the cathedral and baptistery in the Field of Miracles beside it are just as worthy architectural splendors. The town of Pisa, only a short walk away from the tourist hordes, also rewards travelers with its relative lack of commercialism.
