US scientists drill into lake deep under Antarctic ice sheet
US scientists have drilled through 2,600 feet of ice to reach Lake Whillans, a subglacial lake buried beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. Over the next few days, scientists will perform a variety of tests on samples gathered from the lake’s water and sediment, before the drill hole freezes up.
An official with knowledge of a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school says 27 people are dead, including 18 children. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way.
An implant attached to the retinas of people blinded by Retinitis Pigmentosa is allowing them to see, in many cases, for the first time in years. The implant, approved for use in the United States on Thursday (February 14), is part of a technology called Argus II which creates visual signals with stimulii sent directly from the implant to the brain.
