On August 29, 2013, Congressman Patrick Murphy got a good taste how the people of his district feel about the pollution of the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon by poisonous water that is being discharged from Lake Okeechobee through a canal operated by the Army Corps of Engineers. At a meeting the Rivers Coalition in Stuart, Florida, Murphy had just promised to help the people in his district, when Kathy Thomas, who had worked for his election campaign played her protest song, "Save the St. Lucie River" for him while Murphy held up the lyrics. At the end, a tearful Thomas hugged the congressman and kissed him on the cheek.
