World War Two Bomb Explodes in Central Tokyo
Japanese authorities detonated a World War Two bomb found in central Tokyo. Full story: The bomb squad was called in on Tuesday (June 4) to Tokyo after a World War Two bomb was found at a large construction site neighbouring a busy train station. Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force brought in massive sand-bags for what Japanese media say was an unexploded 40-centimeter long shell possibly from an Imperial Army anti-aircraft gun. All shops were closed and traffic on commuter trains and a bullet train line were halted in the morning as the bomb disposal experts worked to wall in the bomb with over 3 meters of sand-bags and a detonator. While no residents live within 100 meters of the bomb an evacuation of the station and shopping area near the station was still required. The news of the WW2 explosive surprised locals and forced them to work around the restrictions. The bomb was detonated at four minutes to noon (0256 GMT) with local media saying the explosion could be heard across the city. A large amount of unexploded ordnance is still found in Tokyo and other areas that were heavily bombed before Japan's 1945 surrender ended World War II. Most of the duds were dropped by the United States, but some were buried or lost by the Japanese military as well.
