House of the Dead is a horror movie directed by Uwe Boll from 2003. It is based on the popular video game of the same name. While based on the video game, the script and plot are completely original. It stands as one of the few video game movies that has turned a profit in the box office. The movie revolves around a group of friends who are going to a huge rave on a nearby island. When they arrive at the port, they find the chartered boat has already left, and they convince a local boat captain to take them to the island with the promise that he and his mate can attend the party. Upon arrival at the island, they find a tremendous mess, indicating the party goers had been there, but there is no one around. They split up and head to the location of the party but, upon reuniting, find that one of their companions is now a zombie. After granting her a merciful death, they vow to leave the island but find the boat they arrived on has been overrun with zombie party goers. Now stranded on an island full of zombies, the group starts a desperate struggle to stay away from the undead party guests and find a way home before they share a similar fate. Still, there is more to this island than meets the eye; a sinister force watches the group from a distance, waiting for the opportunity to add them to his zombie servants. The director relies strongly on traditional special effects, minimizing the use of computer-generated effects. This approach, using mainly makeup and visual trickery to create the zombies, gives a much more realistic view of the zombies. Due to the success of this movie, a sequel was produced several years later with a new director and another original plot.
