Aileen Wuornos: The Selling …
Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer is a BBC funded documentary that was written and directed by filmmaker, Nick Broomfield. The film documents the many attempts to interview Aileen Wuornos during the long mediation process through lawyer, Steve Glazer and adopted mother Arlene Pralle. The story follows Aileen Wournos’ actions between 1989 and 1990 when she was a homeless, unkempt prostitute and lesbian. She traveled along the rough interstate highways of Florida, where she has admitted to killing at least seven johns. Each victim was white, middle aged and believed he would receive sex for money from Wournos. The story also focuses upon the ensuing media frenzy as a result of the notoriety of her many crimes as the first known female serial killer. Included are details about each gruesome murder and its immediate aftermath. Wournos has maintained that the men were killed in self-defense, however there is no evidence to support that assertion. While finally being interviewed on death row, Wuornos had been adopted by Arlene Pralle, a horse breeder and Christian fundamentalist. Pralle explained how the glory of God motivated a need for her to rescue Wournos from her terrifying emotional predicament. Also featured is Wournos’ public defender, Steve Glazer, a mix of sixties hippie and rock and roller, which he claims to have been in his past. He is seen singing The Iron Lady by Phil Ochs and a song from the Dark Side of the Moon album by Pink Floyd. Glazer and Pralle attempt to explain what their involvement is and that their intention is to protect and divert Wournos from a decidedly fatal ending. They promise that they can arrange for an interview with Wournos herself for only $25,000 in addition to her access to her personal effects. However, in the meantime, Wournos remained on death row, awaiting execution. There Wournos has explained that she wanted to be put to death. At least twice, her fate had been diverted, despite her protests.
