Escape from Sobibor is a made for television movie based on an amazing real-life story about the most successful uprising of Jewish death camp prisoners in World War II. The inspiring revolt and escape, which took place on October 13, 1943, eventually caused the Nazis to close the death camp. Of the 600 prisoners held at the camp, half of them escaped. Most of them perished in the weeks afterwards, but the camp was such a sore spot for the Nazis that they demolished the prison and placed a forest over it. The film version was produced in 1987, during the golden era of action and war movies. The movie stands as a tribute to the bravery of the prisoners, highlighting that even in the most oppressive and ugly of times, the human spirit prevails. Directed by Jack Gold, a member of the British Realist movement, CBS showed its full confidence in the screen play by airing the special on its network.

An idealistic girl, Patsy Newquist, saves a young apathetic photographer, Alfred Chamberlain, from a gang of hooligans. She falls for him, but he turns out to be a nihilist. They go out anyway. All this happens against the background of random shootings in NYC (at the time the play the movie is based on was written, the city was going broke). Her family accept him, but when she tries to change him and get him to find meaning in life, things go horribly wrong in a cruel twist of fate.

After an airplane trip, a young woman asks Susie's husband, Sam, to keep a doll for her to avoid spoiling the surprise of her daughter's gift. But the real reason is to avoid her partner, Harry Roat, whom she hopes to cheat of the drugs hidden in the doll. Harry discovers her treachery, murders her and leaves the body in Susie's apartment, where he has tracked Sam and the doll. He concocts an elaborate plan, involving Mike and Carlino, small-time hoods, to get Susie, who recently lost her sight in a fire, to reveal the doll's hiding place. They lure Sam away and take advantage of Susie's blindness, posing as an old friend, a police detective, and a father-son pair of eccentrics. Susie eventually catches on and, with the help of her young neighbor, Gloria, shows everyone that she is indeed a "world-champion blind lady."
