Henny, talent scout for the …
Henny, talent scout for the Margaret Ames Film Agency in Hollywood, mistakes Judy and Marian, the understudies, for Eileen and Betty, the real stars of a Broadway show and signs them up for movies. Margaret, furious with Henny for the blunder, fires him---but only temporarily. Another agent, Marty Allen, once married to and still in love with Margaret, signs Betty and Eileen. Henny arrives with Judy and Marian, and the nightclub manager asks Henny to emcee the show. Though he is not sure himself what they can do, Henny introduces the girls and they make a hit in a dramatic sketch. (Simmer down, it's just a Monogram movie, and their nightclub attendees can react anyway director Phil Karlstein/Karlson wants them to.) Big-time movie producer R. J. signs them to a film contract. So, what does this have to do with the title, "A WAVE, a WAC and a Marine"? Because Judy joins the WAVES, Marian the WACS and Marty the Marines and all have two weeks before induction, and that is more than long enough to shoot a Monogram musical-within-a-Monogram musical and have a few days to spare.

Kathie Aumont has just arrived in the big city to work at a defense plant. When the promised accommodation with her friend Sally falls through, Kathie is forced to find somewhere else to live in the city where there is a virtually zero vacancy. She is able to finagle renting the apartment of Johnny Moore, who is just heading off into the marines. What Johnny forgets to tell her before he leaves is that he has given his apartment key to many of his enlisted friends for them to be able to use the apartment whenever they are in town. As such, Kathie never knows who she's going to find in the apartment. Complications ensue when Kathie falls for two of them, and they with her. One of them is Mike O'Brien, a navy sailor and notorious womanizer. The other is Johnny himself, Kathie and he who had a moment before he left and who comes home unexpectedly on a twenty-four hour pass. It gets even more complicated when one of the apartment keys gets into the wrong hands. All these complications are fueled by a gremlin, who vowed to Kathie that he would oversee her seven weeks of bad luck for spilling some salt.

The Whirlwind, written by Anthony Street (pen name only), is …
The Whirlwind, written by Anthony Street (pen name only), is the best selling novel of the last ten years, its success largely attributed to agent Carol Ainsley - the daughter of an actress and a US senator - she who has already sold the movie rights further to capitalize on the success she's already generated. No one except Street's publisher knows his real identity. Henry Pepper, Associate Editor of Knickerbocker Magazine, is assigned by his boss to write a multi-installment article on the success that is Carol Ainsley. Carol is amenable to the idea until she learns that Henry does not want to write a standard biography, but rather an in depth profile of her workings, she reluctant to make public many of her working secrets, especially anything that may place her or her company in a bad light. Her next step, which she has the exclusive contract to do, is find the actor to play the hyper-masculine, romantic yet adventurous lead character of the Whirlwind, the identity of that actor who seems to be elusive at least to her and her staff. This difficulty is one of those items that she does not want Henry to know. However, based on what she learns of Street written in the inside jacket of The Whirlwind, she believes he would be the perfect person to portray his own character. She does whatever she can to find, convince and train "Anthony Street" to be the Whirlwind, which may not be as easy as it sounds and which may have unintended consequences. And she has to do it under the watchful eye of Henry, who takes great pleasure in making her life as difficult as possible, he having more than one motive for his madness.
