When the UN threatens sanctions against his country, the North African Republic of Wadiya, he has no choice but to come to New York City to address the UN Council. While here, General Aladeen is ritualistically stripped of his power by a rogue CIA official and cast out into the city of Manhattan, where he goes from ruthless dictator to being another face in the crowd. Along the way, he meets a woman named Zoey who runs an organic health food store, and runs into a borough of New York that is essentially full of the people he supposedly executed several years ago. Warner Bros. continued a well-known streak of nineties-action shoot-'em-ups with Fair Game of 1995. Starring Alec Baldwin as a put-upon cop and Cindy Crawford as a lawyer-who-knows-too-much, the two are sent on the run against deadly odds. The pair meet after an attempted hit on Crawford's Kate McQueen character goes awry. Kate is a civil lawyer unaware that she's exposed the terrorist operations of ex-KGB agent Ilya Kazak, played by Steven Berkoff - the actor who famously played the villain of Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop. After cameos by a young Salma Hayek as Baldwin's ex-girlfriend, the action escalates with massive bombs being set off to lavish condo's and safe-houses being hit by mercenary weapons-experts. Baldwin's Max Kirkpatrick slowly pieces together the vile plan of Kazak while he and Kate attempt to escape pursuers. Christopher McDonald, Adam Sandler's golf rival from Happy Gilmore, cameos as Max's boss who assists along the way. A "will-they-won't-they" attraction between Kate and Max blossoms among the ballet of bullets. Cars, trains, and even a giant freighter are all fodder for the complex practical stunt work of the period. This is a fast-moving film meant as easy entertainment, carefully constructed to deliver in spades.
