"Tough Luck" Baxter, returning from a prospecting trip, meets Happy Jack Clarke, a former citizen of Baxter City, a boom town which became a ghost town when the gold petered out. A game of cards decides that Clarke will go back to Baxter City with "Tough Luck" in search of ore. Meanwhile, the Firefly, a New York music hall entertainer out of a job, is ordered by her parasitic husband Bert Wilcox to perform at the dance hall in Baxter City. Upon her arrival, she finds the town deserted and strikes out on the open trail. Overcome by the desert, she is rescued and brought back to Baxter City by Danny Ward, a former Yale athlete. Together, "Tough Luck," Clarke, Danny and Firefly organize a family and strike gold. Danny, having fallen in love with Firefly, proposes to her on the very night that her worthless husband comes to town. Wilcox loots the assayer's office, is caught, convicted, and thrown out of town. Out of loyalty, Firefly accompanies him. Danny follows them and finds Firefly abandoned in the desert by Wilcox who has stolen her money and water. Justice is served when Wilcox perishes in a den of rattlesnakes, thus freeing Firefly to return with Danny to Baxter City.

He is visited by York Cantrell, an Easterner, whose mining interests keep him in the vicinity. They stand at the office window watching two sisters, Grace and Daisy Burton. The girls are insulted by men hanging around the Forty Rod saloon and dance hall, run by "Deacon" Doyle and secretly owned by York Cantrell. Tulliver rushes to their assistance and incurs the enmity of Doyle. The next day Truthful states, under big headlines, that Doyle must go, and the following morning finds a notice on his door that Doyle will be in the Forty Rod Saloon at ten o'clock, and there is not a pen pusher in Arizona that can run him out of town. Truthful surprises Doyle and his henchmen by coming into the saloon through a rear door, and. from his horse, lassoes and pulls them out into the desert, where he tells them never to return to Glory Hole. That night Truthful is shot at from York Cantrell's room by Doyle, who has returned. Truthful then drives both from town, not knowing that York has wronged Daisy Burton. Daisy confesses to Grace, and Grace finds Truthful, who, misunderstanding, thinks she is the one who cares for Cantrell. He promises to bring him back, and reaches the railroad, intercepts Cantrell, and forces him to return. Then understanding comes. Cantrell wants to marry Daisy and live a new life, and Truthful comprehends his mistake. Grace turns toward him, with her thanks and relief, and sees him watching her with such eloquent eyes that hers fall for a moment. Then she comes to him and with happy faces, hands clasped, they see York Cantrell married to the sister, and as the priest blesses them, Truthful clasps her close.

Molly Ashley, a child of the slums, is charged with being an accomplice to a shoplifter. Although innocent, she is convicted of shoplifting and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. Jim Tracy, the leader of a band of gangsters, rescues Molly. The following morning Detective Stone is assigned the task of locating and running down Jim Tracy's gang. In order to secure evidence against the gang, he disguises himself as one of the gangsters, runs into their place and pretends that the "cops" are after him. Tracy and the gang take him in. Molly falls in love with Stone and discovers his true identity. One of the crooks gets sore at Jim Tracy and betrays them to the police. Jim accuses Molly of betraying them. Stone resents his accusation. A fight follows and Jim is killed. Stone takes Molly away and gives her a chance to be self-supporting.

Lieutenant Banks, of the United States Army, on special service in Japan, secretly courts Mirami, the daughter of a Samurai. Osaki, her brother, discovers the situation and warns his sister against the American. Banks is ordered back to America, and tells Mirami to be faithful and he will send for her. A year passes, and Lieutenant Banks marries an American girl, while Mirami still faithfully believes that he will return to her and her infant. She has been disowned by her father, and is living alone with a servant. The United States Ambassador writes to Banks, telling him about the child, and he replies, "I was shocked and surprised to bear the news. I want to do all I can for the baby. Explain to Mirami the social barrier that prevented my marrying her. Beg her to send the baby to me that I may look out for his future. Cable me result." Osaki has been ordered to America in the secret service of his country, and he plots with his sister for revenge on Banks. She complies with Banks' request and sends the baby to him, but travels on the same boat, disguised as a man, accompanied by Osaki. In California Osaki secures employment as a fisherman, while Mirami is engaged by Lieutenant Banks as servant. Her face touches his memory, hut in her disguise he does not recognize her. While in Japan Banks has secured maps of great value, and Osaki seeks to recover them. In the dead of night Mirami enters his room and secures the papers, passing them to her brother on the outside, through a window. Banks hears a slight noise and sees the figures in the darkness. He fires and mortally wounds Mirami, while Osaki makes his escape. The dying girl is carried to a bed, and Banks learns her identity. His wife comes into the room, bat Mirami has lapsed into the coma of death. Banks is alone with her as she expires, and falls to his knees by her side in a paroxysm of grief. Far away, safe from pursuit, Osaki destroys the papers he has traveled so far to secure.
