A young entertainer, Carole Beaumont, is wooed by actor …
A young entertainer, Carole Beaumont, is wooed by actor and Producer Charles King but, uncertain of her feelings, she resists his attentions. During an air raid, a bomb explosion rocks the café and Carole is knocked unconscious. In her confused state, fantasies flash through her mind, and she seems to become Nell Gwyn of Old Drury, with Charles King looking very much like King Charles. Recovering, she is advised by her doctor to take a rest in the country and, there, another beau, Albert Gutman, prompts his grandmother, Lady Drayton, to invite Carole to their family home at Windsor. She accepts and telephones Charles, but hangs up when his phone is answered by a female voice. Looking out on Windsor Castle, she sees herself as the young Queen Victoria, and Albert as Prince Albert. Influenced by her daydream, she accepts Albert's proposal. Charles arrives to tell her that all arrangements are made for her to leave with him and the company for Burma, but she refuses saying she will never marry an actor. Barmaid Kate tells Charles why Carole feels the way she does about actors: Carole's mother, Lillian Grey, was with a touring show in 1913 when the handsome star, John Beaumont raised her from the chorus to be his partner in his first West End show. They were a success, fell in love and were married. But the war soon took Beau off to Flanders and Lillian was left to become a great star on her own. Carole was born in wartime, but saw little of her busy mother.

By Whose Hand?

Edward Denton is an elderly widower with one child, …
Edward Denton is an elderly widower with one child, Isobel, a lovely girl of about 19. Owing to the failure of a bank he is in financial difficulties. He telephones to Marks, who is a rich financier, and asks him if he can help him. Marks at first professes himself quite unable to do anything, but a chance meeting with Isobel alters his opinion. He promises Denton that he will see him out of his difficulties on the day that Isobel becomes his wife. The girl is already engaged to a young fellow called Gerald Lee, and will not listen to the idea. There is a quarrel between Marks and Gerald at a ball. A little later the two men appear to have made up their quarrel, for presently Isobel finds them engaged in an absorbing game of cards. Gerald, when the game is over, owes Marks $1,500. Gerald vows he has been cheated. The next morning they find Marks lying in his bed dead, somebody having strangled him in his sleep. Suspicion immediately falls on Gerald Lee, and the young fellow is led away to be kept in custody until the coroner's inquest. Isobel refuses to believe that Gerald is guilty and sets out to unravel the mystery for herself. She begins by searching the room of the murdered man, and discovers a button which does not seem to belong to any of the clothes in the room. Her discoveries, however, only seem to lead from bad to worse, for after a prolonged search she finds that the button belongs to a suit of pajamas of her father's, while on looking further she discovers the key of Marks' bedroom hidden in the pocket of his dressing-gown. The poor girl is now confronted with a terrible dilemma. She finds in her father's bedroom a book entitled "The Strangles." Recollecting that her father has in the past frequently walked in his sleep, it suddenly occurs to her that perhaps the book so worked upon his imagination that he committed the murder unconsciously while walking in his sleep. She decides to watch, and that night sees her father wander through the house quite unconscious of what he is doing or where he is going. After a miserable night of indecision, she finds that the way is made clear for her, for a terrified gardener reports that her father was found lying dead in the garden, having apparently fallen from an upper window. She immediately phones to Scotland Yard for a detective, to whom she shows the different pieces of evidence which she has collected. Her evidence soon places a new construction on matters, and Gerald is triumphantly acquitted amid the plaudits of the crowd. Thus Isobel is consoled for the death of her father by the thought that by her efforts she has saved her lover, and that a bright and happy future stretches before them both.

The Heart of Midlothian

Effie and Jeanie are the two …
Effie and Jeanie are the two daughters of a humble Highlander, Crofton Deans. Jeanie is engaged to a young minister, but Effie is secretly married to a notorious outlaw, her sister alone being aware of this. Effie obtains work in an Edinburgh harness maker's shop. A letter from the outlaw tells her that he has succeeded in finding a home for her with Old Margery, who lives in the woods with her half-crazy daughter, Madge Wildfire. Here a child is born to Effie and the outlaw begs her to keep silent, assuring her that both their lives depend upon it, for in those days if a woman concealed the birth of her child and any mishap overtook it, she was held to be guilty of murder. Madge, who has been driven mad by the loss of her own baby under somewhat identical circumstances, steals the baby and hides it. In her despair, Effie wanders away in search of the little one and eventually arrives at her father's home, distraught and in a sad plight. The outlaw, in the meantime, hears of Effie's misfortune, and abuses Old Margery for her carelessness. Thereupon, in order to be avenged on the outlaw, Old Margery informs the authorities and Effie is consequently dragged from her father's home and arrested on a charge of murdering her baby. Meanwhile, Crazy Madge, leads the soldiers to the outlaw's hiding place but he eludes them. Effie's trial comes in, and everything hangs upon whether Jeanie will admit that she knew of her sister's condition. Although loving her sister devotedly, Jeanie cannot tell the lie that would save Effie and the sentence of death is pronounced. Jeanie then shows the depth of her affection by going on foot to London, to get a pardon from the king through the influence of John, Duke of Argyle, but Crazy Madge and Old Margery plan to kidnap the girl lest their scheme of vengeance should miscarry. They are successful but at the last moment the discursive mood of Crazy Madge changes and she assists Jeanie to escape. She at last arrives in London and, by the aid of John, she secures an audience with Queen Caroline and Lady Suffolk and although at first start the case seems hopeless a pardon is promised to her. A few days later the pardon arrives, and Jeanie sets out for Edinburgh. She arrives on the outskirts of the town on the morning of the execution and is again waylaid by Madge and Old Margery. Old Margery attempts to shoot her but once again the unstable mind of the mad girl veers round and, stepping in front of Jeanie, she receives the bullet and is mortally wounded. Jeanie hastens on and arrives at the place of execution. The outlaw, in the meantime, finds the baby in Madge's keeping and arrives upon the scene. Thus the complete innocence of Effie is proved. The final tableau shows the Outlaw, his wife and child happily reunited.
