Jazz is a 2001 television documentary miniseries, directed by Ken Burns. It was broadcast on PBS in 2001, and was released on DVD and VHS on January 2, 2001 by the same company. Its chronological and thematic episodes provided a history of jazz, emphasizing innovative composers and musicians and American history. Swing musicians Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are the central figures. Several episodes discussed the later contributions of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to bebop, and of Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, and John Coltrane to free and cool jazz. Nine episodes surveyed forty-five years (1917–1961), leaving the final episode to cover forty years (1961–2001). The series was produced by Florentine Films in cooperation with the BBC and in association with WETA-TV, Washington.

The Danny Kaye Show is an American variety show hosted by Danny Kaye that aired on CBS from 1963 to 1967 on Wednesday nights. Directed by Robert Scheerer, the show premiered in black-and-white, but later switched to color broadcasts. At the time, Kaye was at the height of his popularity, having starred in a string of successful films in the 1940s and '50's, made successful personal appearances at such venues as the London Palladium, and appeared many times on television. His most recent films had been considered disappointing, but the television specials he starred in were triumphant, leading to this series. Prior to his television and film career, Kaye had made a name for himself with his own radio show, and numerous other guest appearances on other shows.

The New York neighborhood of Washington Square is populated with young show-biz hopefuls working towards their big break in the theater. It's also the setting for this live variety show starring Ray Bolger. Regulars appearing (at least initially) were Mata and Hari, as operators of a dance school, and Elaine Stritch, operator of the Greenwich Village Inn, where she often introduced acts. Several other performers made regular appearances during the series' run. "Washington Square" aired according to a bizarre schedule. At first it was to appear alternate weeks on Sunday afternoons. After disappearing for a month, it returned, but as a color primetime program running in unrelated time periods. The haphazard scheduling no doubt contributed to the series not becoming a hit.

He had a soft spot for older vaudeville performers and had them on often and because he was much-loved Hollywood figure, he was able to get major stars to appear, sometimes simply in quick cameos.
