Lt. Kinderman and Father Dyer cheer each other up on the anniversary of the death of their mutual friend, Father Damien Karras, by going to see "It's a Wonderful Life" at the local theater in Georgetown, near Washington D.C. But there's no cheering Kinderman while a particularly cruel and gruesome serial killer is at large. His murders, which involve torture, decapitation and the desecration of religious icons, is bad enough; but they also resemble those of the Gemini Killer, who has been dead for fifteen years.

Daisy sews her dress using her husband as a mannequin …
Daisy sews her dress using her husband as a mannequin while the two discuss their coming vacation: Jack wants to go to the mountain and Daisy wants to enjoy the ocean at Santa Barbara. Jack convinces her with brochures and they take a train to a farmer-directed boarding house unlike what they had in mind. The dusty road makes Jack blink and the receptionist mistakes this a sign that he requires liquor (prohibited at the time) so he hands him a glass of whiskey which Jacks spills in a nearby jar when the man turns his back. An elderly lady, thinking that she's helping herself with water, drinks the whole jar. After a dreadful evening, the couple wakes up in the middle of the night to the screams of the old lady, still drunk, who set fire to her doormat. Jack takes the fire extinguisher but the fire grows when sprayed with the gin that the receptionist hid in it. The old lady shouts "save my baby" and Jack bravely rescue a little body from the baby bed in her room which turns out to be the lady's dog. Everyone sleeps outside and the next morning, the couple decides to walk to the station where the traffic happens to be interrupted because a bridge collapsed due to a storm. They walk by a house with a sign saying "Car for sale: $5,000" and decide that it's time to buy the car they've always wanted. Naturally, the car breaks after a few miles and another passing car tilts it to the side. They end up paying a farmer to tie the car to his mule all the way to Santa Barbara where Jack finally feels close to nature when he sees all the bathing beauties around them.
