You Only Live Once is a 1937 American crime drama film …
You Only Live Once is a 1937 American crime drama film directed by Fritz Lang and starring Sylvia Sidney and Henry Fonda. Considered an early film noir, the film was the second directed by Lang in the United States. It is believed to have been inspired by Ben Anderson's 1937 novel Thieves Like Us, itself a retelling of the story of Bonnie and Clyde. At least 15 minutes were trimmed from the original 100-minute version of the film due to its then unprecedented violence. Despite the absence of such scenes, the film is widely considered an early film noir classic.

Ephraim Deacon is a poor man who peddles the pies his wife bakes for ten cents each. Although he's tired, more interested in eating pies than selling them and in no mood for conflict, his wife sends him off to sell the daily pies and to confront their business competitor Phineas Doolittle. After reading a pamphlet named "Brain Power" which promotes power, success and overcoming business problems by the power of the convincing argument, Ephraim approaches Phineas about merging their two tiny pie vending businesses into "The Great American Pie Company". While Ephraim samples his competitors pies, he bamboozles Phineas by discussing their company as if it were already a major corporation poised to buy the farms, mills and railroads it needs to monopolize the pie industry.

After delivering an address at the dedication ceremony of the cemetary at Gettysburg, on 19 November 1863, President Abraham Lincoln is disappointed in the crowd's seeming lack of enthusiasm. The following day, while taking a reflective walk around the Capital, he encounters a young boy in urgent need of an attorney. Accompanying him to a nearby hospital, the boy explains that his brother, a Southern soldier wounded in battle, is dying and wants to dictate his will. The young man, eyes bandaged and unconscious of the stranger's identity, regales him with the newspaper's accounting of the eloquent speech and recites as much of it as he is able. He reassures the address's author that the crowd's lack of ovation was because they were too much in awe to move or speak. The President is humbled.
