Bessie was an HBO film about Bessie Smith, a legendary blues singer. Bessie Smith was originally from Tennessee and became an orphan at a very young age. Bessie had several siblings and after her parents passed away her eldest sister was left to raise the children. Bessie Smith always had ambitions to be on the stage as a respected performer. However, Smith grew up at a time when African Americans were not respected as stage performers or singers. After trying very hard Bessie seemed to have no luck getting into show-business. However, Bessie’s luck began to change when she met Ma Rainey. Ma Rainey was willing to help Bessie realize her dreams and true ambitions. After a period of time Bessie began to receive some positive recognition. After many years of hard work and rejection Bessie found that her luck began to change. Bessie decided to take her brother Clarence wth her and she soon starts her very own show. Bessie met a manager who would later become her husband. Even though her husband helped boost her career the union was unhappy to say the least. During the Great Depression most of the fortune that Bessie has earned disappeared. Bessie decides to move into a tiny apartment with her brother Clarence. In addition, Bessie finds herself back together with Ma Rainey. Possibly due to lonliness Bessie begins a relationship with a man named Richard. Bessie is able to have a successful comeback. She once again earns a great deal of money from her singing talent and meets a man named John Hammond. Hammond would help to manage Bessie’s career and she seems to have really made her mark as a singer/ performer that really made it. Bessie gives a great deal of credit to Richard who would later become her husband.

Writer, director and actor Martin Papazian's debut film LEAST AMONG SAINTS movingly illustrates a man's hard-fought road towards reconciling with his better self. Coming home to a broken marriage and uncertain future, veteran Anthony Hayward (Papazian) thinks he's at the end of his rope. But when his troubled ten year-old neighbor, Wade (Tristan Lake Leabu), calls out for help, Anthony can't seem to turn away. To the dismay of the boy's embattled social worker (Laura San Giacomo), Anthony sets out on a fool's quest to help this heartbroken but hard to reach child find his long-lost father, who might not even exist. Yet in the midst of this new mission - the first that seems to matter since his return -- Anthony begins to come to grips with both the costs of war and the universal power of human connection. As the film builds to an emotional climax, Papazian finds both the gravity and the grace in ordinary, flawed characters pushed to extraordinary acts of compassion and decency.

“The Express” is the dramatic story of Ernie Davis, the first African-American player to win college football’s Heisman Trophy. The film follows Ernie from his struggling childhood in a racist, discriminatory Pennsylvania to his triumphant football career at Syracuse University to the time just prior to his untimely death. The film focuses primarily on Ernie’s life following the Syracuse head football coach’s successful recruitment to bring Ernie onto the team as the successor to the All-American running back Jim Brown. The 1959 season is highlighted specifically as Ernie’s breakout year that catapults him into the national spotlight. Mainly through Ernie’s powerful exploits and superb running talent, Syracuse is able to challenge the University of Texas for the national championship at the 1960 Cotton Bowl. Despite having to overcome several leg injuries and racial bias from the referees Ernie’s heroics at the end of the game lead Syracuse to its first football national championship. The following season, Ernie Davis became the first African-American player to win the Heisman trophy. He would join the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League after he graduated from college but illness consistently kept him from playing until he finally was forced to announce he had been diagnosed with leukemia. In one final gesture to honor Ernie’s greatness as a football player as well as a human being, the Cleveland Browns allow him to dress in uniform and take the field as a Brown. The film closes with the notice of Ernie’s passing at the age of 23; never getting the opportunity to display his talents in the NFL, a dream he always carried until he passed. The film relives many of Ernie’s spectacular moments on the field as well as the obstacles that he faced off of it, which helped make his 1961 Heisman Trophy win even more impressive due to the circumstances and time period in which it came.

Not only does the killer despise policemen, but he also has a grudge against Malloy for pursuing him during a string of prostitute murders four years ago. The killer finally decides to hit Malloy where it hurts, killing one of Malloy's friends on the force, and brutally killing Malloy's fiancé Mary. The grief sends Malloy off the deep end and causes him to become alcoholic, forcing Malloy's colleague, Detective Hendricks, to sign Malloy up at a remote detox clinic in a snow-covered part of Wyoming. The clinic specializes in rehabilitating alcoholic cops. But the killer murders another patient and assumes the patient's identity at the clinic. While Malloy participates in group therapy sessions, the killer starts killing the patients. Among the endangered patients are Jaworski, Slater, Noah, Conner, and a dozen others, one of whom must be the killer. The movie starts in a place called Canton, Mississippi in which Tonya Hailey, a ten year old girl, was brutally raped by two racist individuals named Billy Ray Cobb and James Louis Willard. Tonya was then rushed to the hospital while the two racist rednecks were bragging about what they have done to Tonya. Carl Lee Hailey, Tonya’s father, recalls a similar case that happened a year before. Four men raped an African-American girl in a nearby town, and they got away with it. Carl was determined to not let such an injustice happen to her daughter. James and Billy was arrested and scheduled for court. However, in the courthouse, Carl shot the two men as vengeance for what they did to her daughter. Carl was then arrested and is scheduled for a trial. The NAACP and some African-American leaders try to persuade Carl to choose a top notch attorney. However, Carl chose Jake Tyler Brigance. The presiding judge was Judge Omar Noose. Rufus Buckley was the prosecution attorney. Carl’s attorney did receive a lot of help from other attorneys by joining their team. Noose denies the request of the defendant to change of venue and also denies bail. Carl learned from his wife that a doctor informed her that Tonya’s reproductive organs where severely damaged during the rape that she will not be able to bear a child when she grows up. A member of the KKK was found trying to place bomb in Jake’s house. Other members of Jake’s staff were also attacked by other KKK members. However, they continue to help Jake’s case. The day that the trial began, a riot has brewing outside the courthouse between the local African-American residents and KKK. Stump Sisson became a casualty of a Molotov cocktail that was thrown by one of Carl’s son. However, he was not seen throwing it. The KKK continued their threat that includes the burning of several crosses all around Canton. One burned cross was planted outside Jake’s house that caused Jake’s house to catch on fire. Thankfully, Jake and his family were not home when the house burned to the ground. Because of the increasing violence in Canton, the National Guard was assigned to secure the peace. However, Freddy was determined to get his revenge because of Billy Ray’s death that he did not let the National Guard stop him. Meanwhile, Jake and his team are putting all the efforts they can muster to Carl’s defense.

The Murder of Mary Phagan

The true story of a thirteen …
The true story of a thirteen year old girl who was beaten, murdered, and possibly raped in a factor in 1913 brings suspenseful mystery to the small screen. The four hour long, Emmy Award winning mini-series "Murder of Mary Phagan" was created for audiences to view on television. Mary Phagan was a spirited young girl who was working in a pencil factory. She was to meet with her friends after work but instead was found in the cellar of the very same pencil factory. Although the man who discovered her body was one of the first suspected, soon the manager of the factory, Leo Frank, became the law's primary suspect. The jury becomes convinced that Frank is the killer after a second testimony by a black factory custodian implicates him. The custodian lies originally but then admits he has lied and recounts the events of being told by Frank to help him carry the limp and lifeless body of the girl to the basement. Frank is originally convicted and sentenced to hang but after several appeals his sentence is changed to life in prison. Once word of the hanging sentence being overturned the citizens of the small Georgia town take justice into their own hands. They decide to break into the prison barrack where Leo Frank is imprisoned and take him back to their town to be killed by lynching. Antisemitism prevailed over prejudice against blacks in this movie. The black custodian was trusted and believed even though he had previously lied. Credits include the work of Jack Lemmon as the governor, John Slaton, who commuted Frank's sentence and Peter Gallagher as Leo Frank, the man convicted and lynched for the murder of Mary Phagan. Charles Dutton also played a role as the actual murderer; Jim Conley. The screenplay was written by Larry McMurtry and directed by William "Billy" Hale.
