It's the Depression, and everyone needs to hold onto a dream …
It's the Depression, and everyone needs to hold onto a dream to get them through the bad times. Car maker Charles Howard is no different, he who is trying to rebuild his life after the tragic death of his only child and the resulting end of his first marriage. With second wife Marcela at his side, Charles wants to get into horse racing and ends up with a team of underdogs who are also chasing their own dream. The first is trainer Tom Smith, who has a natural instinct to spot the capabilities of horses. The second is the horse Tom chooses for Charles, Seabiscuit, an unconventional choice as despite his pedigreed lineage, Seabiscuit is small at fifteen and a half hands tall with a slight limp. But Tom can see something in Seabiscuit's nature to make him a winner, if only Seabiscuit can be retrained from his inbred losing ways. And third is the jockey they decide to hire, Johnny "Red" Pollard, so nicknamed because of his hair color. Like Tom, Red has always shown a natural way with horses, but a difficult upbringing due solely to the Depression has made Red an angry young man, which has gotten him into trouble both on and off the track. And he is large for a jockey, and thus he always feels the need to battle the weight issue. Another common trait between Tom, Seabiscuit and Red is that they have been called crazy by those in traditional horse racing circles. Against the odds, Seabiscuit, with his human team behind him, does show his winning abilities and captures the imagination of all those others wanting to believe in a dream. But Seabiscuit's victories are at smaller races. As such, Charles aims high and wants Seabiscuit to race Triple Crown winner War Admiral, who by all accounts is a winner and should be a winner. If given the chance to race against War Admiral (whose owner doesn't want to race as he feels he has nothing to prove), will Seabiscuit and his team continue to keep the dreams of the common Americans alive? Through the good and the bad, especially as Red and Seabiscuit face mirroring problems, they all have to decide what is in their collective best interest.

The movie starts in a place called Canton, Mississippi in which Tonya Hailey, a ten year old girl, was brutally raped by two racist individuals named Billy Ray Cobb and James Louis Willard. Tonya was then rushed to the hospital while the two racist rednecks were bragging about what they have done to Tonya. Carl Lee Hailey, Tonya’s father, recalls a similar case that happened a year before. Four men raped an African-American girl in a nearby town, and they got away with it. Carl was determined to not let such an injustice happen to her daughter. James and Billy was arrested and scheduled for court. However, in the courthouse, Carl shot the two men as vengeance for what they did to her daughter. Carl was then arrested and is scheduled for a trial. The NAACP and some African-American leaders try to persuade Carl to choose a top notch attorney. However, Carl chose Jake Tyler Brigance. The presiding judge was Judge Omar Noose. Rufus Buckley was the prosecution attorney. Carl’s attorney did receive a lot of help from other attorneys by joining their team. Noose denies the request of the defendant to change of venue and also denies bail. Carl learned from his wife that a doctor informed her that Tonya’s reproductive organs where severely damaged during the rape that she will not be able to bear a child when she grows up. A member of the KKK was found trying to place bomb in Jake’s house. Other members of Jake’s staff were also attacked by other KKK members. However, they continue to help Jake’s case. The day that the trial began, a riot has brewing outside the courthouse between the local African-American residents and KKK. Stump Sisson became a casualty of a Molotov cocktail that was thrown by one of Carl’s son. However, he was not seen throwing it. The KKK continued their threat that includes the burning of several crosses all around Canton. One burned cross was planted outside Jake’s house that caused Jake’s house to catch on fire. Thankfully, Jake and his family were not home when the house burned to the ground. Because of the increasing violence in Canton, the National Guard was assigned to secure the peace. However, Freddy was determined to get his revenge because of Billy Ray’s death that he did not let the National Guard stop him. Meanwhile, Jake and his team are putting all the efforts they can muster to Carl’s defense.

During the American Civil War, a Union Army captain leads his rag-tag cavalry troop up a misty creek to a remote farm to appropriate enemy (Confederate) livestock. The farm is worked by Sarah Anders, whose husband is away fighting for the Confederate Army. Far from the great armies and battlefields, a very private civil war erupts. The Captain and Sarah are pulled apart by the war's undertow into choices they can not fully control or understand. Each character in this drama must decide whether loyalty will be paid in blood. This story has a relevance to current partisan conflicts. Armies are not filled with murdering psychopaths. Good people can be driven to do bad things. The story chronicles the pathology of war, how escalating events can trigger unasked-for tragedy. Mingo County, West Virginia, 1920. Coal miners, struggling to form a union, are up against company operators and the gun thugs of the notorious Baldwin-Felts detective agency. Black and Italian miners, brought in by the company to break the strike, are caught between the two forces. UMWA organizer and dual-card Wobbly Joe Kenehan determines to bring the local, Black, and Italian groups together. While Kenehan and his story are fictional, the setting and the dramatic climax are historical; Sid Hatfield, Cabell C. Testerman, C. E. Lively and the Felts brothers were real-life participants, and 'Few Clothes' is based on a character active several years previously.
