When a Russian satellite orbiting the Earth starts to veer off course. It seems like the guidance system in the satellite is of American origin. It's important to try and fix it before it comes into the atmosphere. N.A.S.A. man, Bob Gerson (James Cromwell) tries to find out who designed it, and discovers that it was designed by Frank Corvin (Clint Eastwood), an Air Force pilot who, forty years ago, was part of a team who was originally suppose to go to space, but when N.A.S.A. was formed and Gerson's influence, they were dropped. Gerson asks Frank to help, but Frank still holds a grudge. But after some prodding, he agrees but only if he and his team can go there so he can fix it. Gerson reluctantly agrees, so Frank recruits his former team members, "Tank" Sullivan (James Garner), Jerry O'Neill (Donald Sutherland), and "Hawk" Hawkins (Tommy Lee Jones) to join him. After some strenuous tests, they're cleared. And they go up with two other astronauts and check out the satellite and discover that they weren't told the whole truth.

New Yorkers Ouisa and Flan Kittredge are upper-class private art dealers, pretentious, but compassionate. Their prized possession is a double-sided Kandinsky: one side represents control; the other, chaos. They relay a story to their friends and acquaintances that becomes legendary over time: their encounter with a young black stranger who came stumbling upon their front door one evening as they were courting Geoffrey Miller, an important investor who could make them wealthy beyond their dreams. The young man, Paul Poitier, had just arrived in the city when he was mugged outside their building, he sported a minor knife wound to the abdomen. He was a friend of the Kittredges' children, who are attending Harvard; more importantly, he's the son of actor and Director Sidney Poitier. Tomorrow, Paul is meeting up with his father, who is in town directing a movie of "Cats". Beyond the attraction of talking Paul into getting them roles in the movie, Ouisa, Flan, and Geoffrey all end up being captivated by Paul's charm, charisma, pedigree, and eloquence. After tending to his wounds, the Kittredges invite him to stay the night. Their encounter with him ends up being an all-too-familiar story that leads them on a search for him after he leaves their house the next morning. In that search, Ouisa in particularly starts to critically study their lives and how much compassion they actually have.

Lois Hardwick was a child actress of the 1920s. She was chosen as the fourth actress to play "Alice" in the "Alice Comedies" film short series by Walt Disney. The previous three were Virginia Davis, Margie Gay, and Dawn O'Day (later changed her stage name to "Anne Shirley"). Hardwick starred in 10 "Alice Comedies" films in 1927, but 6 of them are considered lost films. Her debut in the series was "Alice's Circus Daze" (1927)., where she played a circus acrobat. Her final appearance in the series was "Alice in the Big League" (1927), where she played the umpire in a baseball game. The Alice series ended after that, since producer Walt Disney was in financial trouble. Hardwick was next cast to play the character "Mary Jane" in the "Buster Brown" film series (1925-1929). The series was an adaptation of a popular comic strip and Hardwick's "Mary Jane" was the young protagonist's love interest. After the series ended in 1929, Hardwick retired from acting. In 1959, Hardwick married fellow actor Donald Sutherland. In 1966, the marriage ended in divorce. They had no known children. She died two years later.
