Hittin' the Trail
This was one of the earlier uses of Robert Tansey's favorite plot …
This was one of the earlier uses of Robert Tansey's favorite plot (only the 3rd time he had trotted it out of the stable, but he got six more films out of it in later years) in which a group of outlaws (wrongly jailed this time) are let out to join up with the good guys against a worse bunch of outlaws. And, not unusual in the B-western genre, most of the production crew wore several hats; director Robert N. Bradbury and supervisor Lindsley Parsons wrote a song for Tommy Bupp, one of the actually good kid actors of the time who proved real quick-like that singing wasn't his strong suit, while Robert Emmett Tansey worked three jobs under three names... Robert Emmett on story and screenplay, Robert Tansey as the production manager and Al Lane as the assistant director. And, for a change, music director Frank Sanucci actually earned a composers' credit as he did write a song, as opposed to the multi-times some source keeps insisting on crediting him as a composer when he was really the musical director serving up canned music. Roving horse-trader Tex Randall (Tex Ritter) and Hank Hank Worden swap horses with a fleeing outlaw, The Tombstone Kid (Archie Ricks), and the pursuing Sheriff Grey (Ed Cassidy) comes along and arrests Tex as the man he was pursuing. But the man who framed the Tombstone Kid , saloon owner and leader of a horse-theft gang, James Clark (Earl Dwire), clears Tex and he is released. Clark then rigs the wheel at his saloon so Tex can win some money and buy the stolen herd of horses Clark can't get across the border, then has a henchman steal the receipt and also has plans to get the horses back. Tex and Hank swap herds with Dad Reed (Jack C. Smith), so Clark has him arrested for horse theft also. Things don't get much better for Tex and Hank until the Tombstone Kid shows up and shoots henchman Slug (Charles King just as he is about to shoot Tex. This is because when Tex swapped Tombstone a fresh horse back in the first reel, Tombstone thanks him and says something about casting "bread upon the water" (which Tex has to explain to Hank is from the Bible). They ride back to town with proof of Clark's double-dealing, and the sheriff lets Tombstone's six men out of jail, and they join Tex, their ranks now swollen to about fifty riders, to chase Clark and his gang across the plains in a chase-type scene much favored by director Bradbury over the years. That only leaves time for Tex to explain to Jean Reed (Jerry Bergh), the rancher's daughter, that he is really an agent for the Soutland Railraod, commissioned to pay a large price for the right-of-way through her father's ranch.

Stanton, with the aid of others, has a land-grab scheme going to take over the ranch owned by Tom Storm and his kid-brother Billy, since Stanton knows there is gold on the property. To complicate matters, Stanton has a henchman file a lawsuit against Storm, and has Billy Storm cheated in a poker game and is holding the I.O.Us over Billy in order to get him to aid Stanton's rustlers. Plus, the bank holds a mortgage on the ranch which is due in a few days. In order to get the money needed to buy the ranch when the bank forecloses, Stanton sends three men to rob the bank, one of them being Spain who is the man who filed the lawsuit. Tom is at the bank when it is held-up and kills the third bandit, Spain, but the other two get away with the money and take it to Spain. Stanton then accuses Tom of intentionally murdering Spain. The gang continues to make raids on Tom's cattle-herd so he won't have the money to pay off the mortgage-note. Stanton deposits the stolen money in the bank, and his gang runs Tom's herd over a cliff, and Tom is also injured in the stampede. The banker has no recourse other than to put the property up at public auction. But the banker has checked the serial-numbers on the money Stanton deposited and knows it is the robbery-money. The auction is held---and Tom IS NOT there---but the banker bids against Stanton, foils his plans and then has him charged with robbery and murder, while Tom is wandering around horseless and helpless. There is also one other man who knows the property has gold on it, and he is the father of Tom's sweetheart. This one has a whole bunch of different side-plots, all of which do get tied together.

One of a series of films, including two shorts, produced by …
One of a series of films, including two shorts, produced by William Berke starring David Sharpe, following Sharpe's work for Hal Roach in shorts and before Sharpe became a mostly-full time stunt man. In this one, Sharpe sings, tap dances, does acrobats, fights, climbs up and down building walls and drives and rides all vehicles that come his way. The first half is a series of collegiate escapades as Ed Bentley (David Sharpe) is finally expelled from dear old Wellmore by Dean Carter (Monte Blue), and he and his valet, Shadow (Fred Toones billed as "Snowflake") are on the way to a bank to get money to go home on, when Ed mistakes two bodyguards (Roger Williams and Ted Adams) pushing their charge, heiress June Merton (Gertrude Messinger, then married to David Sharpe), into a car as being kidnappers. He and Shadow follow them to the Merton apartment and begin to try and "rescue" her from the kidnappers who aren't kidnappers, although with Roger Williams and Ted Adams in the roles, the impression is that it hasn't occurred to them and one keeps expecting them to revert to type. But across the hall, Louie (Matty Fain) and Sonia (Sheila Terry), the low-rent tenants living on the same floor with the "rich" Mertons, have every intention of kidnapping the girl, and do so with the aid of the bumbling Ed and Shadow. Berke was also producing a western series with Harry Carey at the time, and the only cast members from those westerns missing here are Chief Thunder Cloud, Harry Carey and his horse Sonny. Lots of outdoor action and chases with views of 1935 Hollywood.
