Chapter 15: "The Living Death" - Chapter 14 ends with the floating hand writing a message to John Spencer and Polly Marion that all would be made clear in next week's episode. Tom and Polly watch fascinated as the dis-embodied Hand writes (in flashback scenes, mostly.) Cronin and Professor Duvam wait in an adjoining room. The Hand writes that it (he) was a member of "The Black Seven," a psychical and scientific research group in Paris and, because other scientists considered them crazy owing to their advanced theories, they and their meetings were kept secret. Five of these men were the victims of "The Voice" (also dis-embodied) in previous chapters, the sixth was Dr. Reynolds and the seventh was Emil LaRoux. The latter, not content, with proving astral bodies could be projected, was also convinced he could recall a soul at will, providing that the body in which the soul had lived on earth was preserved by a certain ancient process. The other members were convinced that no one would consent to being mummified alive. But LaRoux learned that he could easily dominate the will of Reynolds' wife, Irene. He told five of the members he had found his subject for the experiment. The one he didn't tell was Reynolds. A year later, deep in the heart of the African jungle on an expedition and in Reynold's absence, LaRoux made Irene his experiment victim, and left the camp with her mummified body and her infant child. In pursuit, Reynolds found LaRoux's dead body in the desert sand, with a note in his hand saying he had sent Irene's mummified body back to civilization to the five members not on the expedition and the baby son was to be the channeled means of communication with her in what LaRoux called "The Living Death". That night Reynold's was bitten by a snake and his servant cut off his hand to save his life. Later, a human arm was grafted to Reynolds' body and he discovered when his astral body was projected, only the missing hand was visible. He now had his method of revenge.

Morris, a hardened criminal, …
Morris, a hardened criminal, is imprisoned for larceny and has engaged William Newman, a police court lawyer, to defend him. As recompense, Morris gives Newman his vest in which are sewed four valuable diamonds. Newman is attracted by a girl who slaves for the proprietress of his boarding house. Georgianna, who is afraid of Newman, is arrested for the theft of several cheap rings belonging to the proprietress, which have been mislaid. While in prison Newman promises to pay her bail, if she is willing to meet his advances. Newman cuts the diamonds from the vest, as he is determined to get away with all instead of one, according to the agreement. The new hole in the vest is discovered, and Morris is brought before the chief. The two are left alone and Morris hits the chief and disappears through the window. Georgianna's case is dismissed, but she thinks Newman is responsible for her being set free. On arriving at his rooms a fierce struggle ensues. A knock is heard and she is told to hide behind the couch. Morris enters the room and shoots Newman, who falls dead. Georgianna is held for the murder, Morris having escaped into the room adjoining Newman's, in which McHugh, a newspaper reporter, is dressing. Willy, a roustabout in the boarding-house, and an admirer of Georgianna's, becomes suspicious. He stacks furniture and looks through the transom when the furniture falls with a clamor. Morris is terrified and is about to draw his revolver when McHugh hits him with a bottle and then handcuffs him. Leaving Willy to guard the captive, he dashes to the police station and to his office to write up his scoop. Meantime, Bennett, another reporter, arrives and looking over the transom sees Morris still handcuffed and Willy guarding him. He phones for help, and is disappointed because of not being the first to get the story. McHugh feeling sorry for them sends Willy and Georgianna, who has been set free to live with an uncle of his.

Ernie hadn't paid his rent for five years, and he also owed for a five-year laundry bill, but this didn't deter him from cooking ham and eggs over the gas jet and also making eyes at the landlord's daughter. He might have gotten away with this clandestine cuisine, but the landlord had the nose of a Siberian meat hound, and one unlucky morning he smelled Ernie's breakfast right through the partition. On top of this he caught Ernie talking to his daughter. This was the last straw and he decided that Ernie must be put out. Instead of putting him out, however, they put all his furniture out and left him without even a chair to sit on. How stony-hearted landlords are often fooled, how landladies make unfortunate mistakes, and how it never pays to change your attitude toward people simply because you think they have money was never better illustrated than in this case. The daughter got Ernie, Ernie got some unexpected "mazuma," and landlord got a terrible shock. The only one who got anything at all was an unpleasant looking rival, and this last received a painful black eye.

After several interviews with publicity men and advertising agents, he is thoroughly disgusted and fatigued and his head sinks wearily on his desk and he dreams. His Satanic Majesty appears to Mr. Noad and informs him that any one wish he may have will be granted. Noad promptly wishes that there be no advertising in the world. Satan smiles maliciously and grants the wish. Still dreaming, Noad sees himself sent out the next morning to get some breakfast cereal. He is astonished to see no billboards; a street car whizzes by signless. He can find no store with either the firm name or the label of the kind of wares they handle. When he finally lands in a grocery store he observes that the cans and packages are not labeled, as it would be advertising to put any names on them. When he gets to his office he gets mixed up in locating his room; all the familiar names have been removed from the doors. Many other humorous incidents happen to convince Mr. Noad that advertising, after all, has its advantages. Satan appears to him again. Noad makes a vicious "swat" at him; he falls to the floor. Sergeant Kelly meets Patrolman Finnegan, a new man on the force, and tells him above all else he must keep tramps and hobos off his beat. Finnegan sallies forth. At the first corner he spies a hobo about to sneak a bottle of milk from an areaway. Finnegan makes a rush. The hobo disappears; turning, he sees him standing several feet away. He gives chase and as he rounds the corner, he finds the hobo about to "swipe" a bottle of milk from a baby carriage. Again the hobo disappears. Further down the street, he bumps into a portly gentleman. As the brave Finnegan proceeds to disentangle him from the hobo, the latter is suddenly swept from view. The hobo now stands on a grocery barrel a few feet away. They take up the chase. Again the hobo is swept from view, to appear some feet away, laughing and jeering at his pursuers. The grocer and a nurse maid join the chase up a hill. Finnegan takes the lead, making a flying leap at the hobo, who has stumbled and fallen and is next discovered on the tail board of a delivery wagon, racing away. Finnegan commands a passing auto and they all jump in. The auto soon passes the wagon. As Finnegan jumps the hobo is not there, but in the auto beside the chauffeur. The fat man, the nurse maid, the grocer and the chauffeur make a concerted dive for the hobo, who as quickly vanishes. This time he is seen on a motorcycle. The auto turns and gives chase. The motorcycle circles the delivery wagon a few laps and Finnegan throws his club at the hobo, knocking him off the cycle. This wild chase continues with many laughable incidents resulting. Finnegan finds the hobo finally in his sweetheart's garden, where she is kneeling at his feet in an adorable pose. In his rage, he makes a leap to throttle the hobo only to find himself choking his sweetheart's father, who gives the suitor a sound beating. Finnegan awakes standing beside a lamp post, where the roundsman is giving him a "dressing-down" for falling asleep at his post.

The great awakening in the Colonies in the spring of 1775; the patriotic activities of Samuel Adams and John Hancock; the midnight ride of Paul Revere; the gathering of the Minute Men and the battle of Lexington, all these important details of Colonial history are shown as a prelude to the intense war romance woven around the situation at Valley Forge during the terrible winter of 1777, when the cause of Liberty looked next to Betty, daughter of a Minute Man who was killed in the battle of Lexington, is stopping at the inn of her uncle, a Tory sympathizer, near the winter camp of Washington's army at Valley Forge. Betty loves and is courted by a rebel soldier, who in reality is a British spy. A detachment of Hessians are occupying the inn when news arrives from Valley Forge that the time is propitious for attacking the Continentals. Betty overhears the plans of the Hessians. To carry word of the proposed attack to Washington, she disguises herself as a crippled boy, and by a clever ruse obtains possession of the written plans of the Hessians. As she emerges from the inn she meets her sweetheart, the spy. Trusting in him, she tells him of her purpose and he takes the plans and' promises to deliver them to Washington. She returns to the inn and removes her disguise. Instead of carrying out Betty's instructions, the spy brings word to the Hessians that Washington will spend the night at the inn. Betty's brother, who has been granted a leave of absence by Washington to visit his sister, is concealed near the inn. He hears the spy betray his commander. The brother attacks the spy and in the battle the brother is overpowered, but not before Betty learns the true identity of the man she loves. The spy and the Hessians then plot to murder Washington if he arrives at the inn. Their plans are again overheard by Betty. Before she can do anything, however, the Hessians are hidden in the house, and Washington and Lafayette arrive. The conspirators intend to murder Washington as he sleeps and he is conducted to a bedroom by the Tory innkeeper. Betty now liberates her brother and tells him to flee to Valley Forge and bring the Continental soldiers to save their general. Betty then goes to Washington's bedroom and tells him: "The landlord says will you take the other room, sir. This one is already taken." Washington, with no suspicion of the girl's noble purpose, is led into her bedroom while she returns and occupies his room. The spy cannot prevail upon any one of the bloody soldiers to do the bloody deed, so he decides to do it himself. He steals upstairs and into the room he supposes is occupied by Washington. Once beside the bed, he plunges his dagger into the form which is lying before him. In the meantime, Betty's brother has warned the Continentals of the plot against Washington's life. Lafayette hurries to the inn with, a detachment of soldiers. Upon his arrival at the inn he accuses the spy. "Too late," cried the traitor, "your commander lies dead upstairs." At this intense moment General Washington comes downstairs, unscratched. A moment later, Betty follows him wounded to death. She denounces her former sweetheart and dies. The spy is taken prisoner and carried away to await the punishment which is reserved for traitors.
