They eventually are picked up by another emigrant train and allowed to go on with them. The Danites return to their chief, where they report all but two are killed and receive orders to pick up their trail and never leave it until they, too, are killed. They proceed on their quest and incidentally join the emigrant train of which Nancy and Georgie are members. Stopping for the night, the "Danites," Hickman and Carter, recognize little Georgie, and seeing their chance, kill him and ride away. Nancy gets her gun and starts after them. Nancy, being unable to find the murderers, returns to the camp and finds it deserted, except for the grave of little Georgie. From the top of a hill she sees a hunter's cabin, and an idea comes to her and she makes her way to it. Entering, she cuts her hair and takes a suit of the hunter's son's clothes and, changing, is always known as Billy Piper. Part Two: Billy Piper, a new arrival, inquires of Parson, the town drunkard, where he can lodge, and has just received his answer when Limber Tim arrives with news of the arrival of a new teacher. All the men prepare a welcome for "him" when they are taken off their feet by the entrance of a young woman, who is subsequently dubbed the "widow." Billy Piper is overjoyed at seeing one of her own kind, and these two become good friends. The men, too, have fallen victims and despite their sudden revolution as to looks and presents, maintains a laughing mien, and still favors Billy. Hickman and Carter, men of the Danite clan, suspect Billy Piper of being the woman they are seeking and follow her as she leaves to visit the "widow." The Danites arrive at the cottage and look in the window where the "widow" and Billy are talking. Billy sees them and faints. He is resuscitated by the "widow "" who discovers his sex, but promises to keep his secret. A year elapses. Sandy and the "widow," married, are receiving congratulations from their friends upon the arrival of an heir. The Danites, however, still sure that Billy is Nancy Williams, resolve to be convinced, and as Billy spends nearly all his time at the widow's, write a note to her husband, Sandy, warning him to "keep an eye on Billy." On one of his visits the widow pleads with Billy to reveal his identity, but he refuses, and Sandy, coming in at that moment, accuses the widow of duplicity and orders Billy to leave the house. In the meantime, the Danites start off for Billy's home, only to find it empty. They go on to the widow's, where Billy is and Sandy enters. Billy pleads with him to save him, vowing his innocence, and Sandy agrees to. The men, bent on vengeance, crowd in and are met by Sandy's revolver. He orders them to stand aside for Billy to pass. Billy starts away, but sees the Danites, who have pushed forward. A heart attack seizes her and she falls dead in Sandy's arms. Then it is that her identity is revealed, that Nancy Williams drops the name forever of Billy Piper. The Civil War has begun, …
The Civil War has begun, and Mace Brewer goes to the front, leaving his young wife alone. His friend, Joe Saunders, also has to leave his aged mother and answer the call of duty to his country. The misfortunes of war claim Mace, and at night as Joe, sorely wounded, limps off the battlefield, he leaves Mace for dead. Soldiers burying the dead, discover life in Mace and he is hurried to the hospital, where the surgeons succeed in reviving him. Thinking Mace dead, Joe writes to his mother of this tragedy, and she sadly shows the letter to the wife. Joe returns. Mace's widow calls for the details of his death. After recovering from the operation it is found that Mace's mind is affected, and he is taken to an asylum for treatment. A year passes and we see Joe a sturdy blacksmith, being visited in his shop by his mother and the widow with whom he is plainly in love, but he lacks the courage to tell her so. Finally one Sunday on the way home from church, he manages to slip a note into her hand. He has asked her to place a lamp in the window that night if his answer is to be "yes." Fearfully Joe watches for that light and is overjoyed when it appears. Mary accepts him. At the close of another year, Joe and Mary are supremely happy in the possession of a baby. These two years have completely restored Mace to health and reason and he is discharged from the asylum. So he goes back to his home. Mace seeks his friend Joe. The horror of recognition almost makes a madman of Joe, and when Mary comes in and sees this man as if from the dead, the shock is so great she falls insensible upon the floor. Poor Mary must decide between them. She loves Joe twofold, for himself and also because he is the father of her child. But old fashioned ideas of honor compel her to sorrowfully place her baby in the arms of the father, and to go with her lawful husband.

The Still Alarm

John Bird and Franklyn Fordham were business partners in …
John Bird and Franklyn Fordham were business partners in years gone by. The firm being on the verge of bankruptcy, sought in every way to retrieve its lost prestige. Fordham, a man of honor in all his dealings, and afterward a fond and devoted father, is made the innocent offender and accused of a crime through the unscrupulous plotting of Bird. The result was the great Johnston Mystery that had baffled the police for years. Bird leaves the city after securing the valuables left deposited in the firm's safe before Johnson's death. While Fordham became prosperous, his former partner became a renegade and fell lower and lower as the years rolled on. Elinor, the cherished daughter of Fordham, was blooming into womanhood and had found her love reciprocated when Jock Manley, the blacksmith's son, came into her life. He was made a trusted employee of her father's and became a favorite for his honor and integrity. Then dark days came upon them. Bird returned and threatened his former partner, and asked as a price for his silence the hand of Elinor. To shield the family name and save them from disgrace he is forced to discharge Jock from his employ and renounce him as his future son-in-law. After a few months of disappointment and search for work, Jock is again back with his old fire department associates. In order that he may accomplish his ends, Bird, through the pretense of being a newspaper man (under the assumed name of Gorman), gains admittance to engine house and cuts the wires. At the same time a mysterious fire breaks out in the Fordham mansion, but kind providence sends a messenger, telling Jock the threatened danger. Paled with emotion and with a determination as rigid as stone, turns in the 4/11/44 and rushes madly to the rescue, for there was a higher love than even his love for duty that spurred him into the burning home in time to save Elinor and her father. Thus again Bird's scheme had failed. The day has arrived when his marriage is to be performed. As a last hope, Jock, through a ruse of illness, induces Elinor to visit him, knowing Bird would follow and thus give him a chance to meet face to face with the man that had ruined his future. This proves the undoing of the treacherous Bird and landed him into the hands of the officers and results in the reuniting of the devoted lovers.

Chased off by the antics of …
Chased off by the antics of Hank the Mule, Dorothy ends up in her cornfield, where she realizes her family's Scarecrow is alive. She helps him down and he takes a tumble on the turnstyle. A cyclone soon arrives and leaves Dorothy, Scarecrow, Toto and Hank spinning around on a haystack, with Imogene the Cow flying soon after. Soon after their arrival, the Wizard of Oz issues a public decree that he is a humbug, to make sure no one ever finds out. Glinda pops up out of the background and transforms Toto into a man in a bulldog suit to serve as a better protector for Dorothy. Then they encounter the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and Eureka. Nevertheless, she is captured by Momba, the Wicked Witch of the West (suggesting Baum thought the other witches were Mombe, Mombo, and Mombu, in keeping with the council in _Queen Zixi of Ix_) and her flying lizards and soldiers. Dorothy defeats Momba, and they arrive at the Emerald City just in time for the Wizard's going away party.
