She starred in silent films as a child, and then sound films as an adult, but perhaps she is best known for her leading roles opposite Gene Autry in the early 1940s in five horse opera features. She was also known for her collaborations with director Blake Edwards on five occasions. She also appeared on Broadway, radio and television, having appeared on screen at ten weeks old in 1918. She was still appearing on screen at the time of her death, with her latest project opposite her son Tom Waldman Jr. in the comedy Kill a Better Mousetrap, based on a play by Scott K. Ratner, filmed in the summer of 2018 and not yet released at the time of her death.

The book agent meets the daughter of a capitalist on a street car when she accidentally ties her shoelace to his. A few days later the girl's father advertises for a butler. A gang of crooks send one of their number to apply for the position. He is accepted. The capitalist gives his wife the choice between a trip abroad and a pearl necklace. She first decides to take the pearls, then changes her mind. They return the necklace and depart with their daughter for their trip abroad. Immediately upon their departure the butler telephones the jeweler, telling him the capitalist wishes the necklace sent out again. The rest of the gang then hide in the house, prepared to rob the messenger. The book agent arrives at the house with his case. He is mistaken for the messenger and attacked. He is in a desperate struggle with the gang when the capitalist and his family return, having missed their boat. The daughter recognizes the book agent and admires his courage. This admiration later results in their marriage.

One evening he returns home and finds the room filled with flowers which Hildebrand has sent her. He also finds a note from Hildebrand telling her he will call and take her to the opera that night. He is furious and waits for Hildebrand. The capitalist offers him $25,000 to leave the country for two years. Hildebrand accepts. The wife, who has overheard the conversation, now enters the room. The capitalist shows her how Hildebrand's love could be bought for a paltry sum of money, then tells her to go with him. She falls on her knees and begs her husband's forgiveness, which he gladly gives.

Meanwhile his released cellmate forces the convict's wife again and again to give him money, and calling at her home one night, attempts to kiss her, but she repels him with a revolver. The pardoned convict arrives just in time to hear what passes and almost chokes his former cellmate to death. His wife, however, interferes; the former cellmate departs, and there is a happy reunion between husband and wife.

The undertaker is one of the members of the party and loses all his money. In the midst of the game the constable knocks at the door. All except Fuss and Henry leap out of the window. They climb up a chimney and flee to the undertaker's house, where, exhausted, they drop asleep in his bed. In the meantime the two wives have heard their husbands were killed in a wreck. They go to the undertaker's shop and he shows them their sleeping husbands all begrimed from their trip through the chimney. The wives pay the undertaker to care for the bodies. When the husbands return home they find crepe on their doors. They vow never to play again.
