Johnny Doesn't Live Here Any More

Kathie Aumont has just …
Kathie Aumont has just arrived in the big city to work at a defense plant. When the promised accommodation with her friend Sally falls through, Kathie is forced to find somewhere else to live in the city where there is a virtually zero vacancy. She is able to finagle renting the apartment of Johnny Moore, who is just heading off into the marines. What Johnny forgets to tell her before he leaves is that he has given his apartment key to many of his enlisted friends for them to be able to use the apartment whenever they are in town. As such, Kathie never knows who she's going to find in the apartment. Complications ensue when Kathie falls for two of them, and they with her. One of them is Mike O'Brien, a navy sailor and notorious womanizer. The other is Johnny himself, Kathie and he who had a moment before he left and who comes home unexpectedly on a twenty-four hour pass. It gets even more complicated when one of the apartment keys gets into the wrong hands. All these complications are fueled by a gremlin, who vowed to Kathie that he would oversee her seven weeks of bad luck for spilling some salt.

Following 1939's "The Phantom Stage", the last of 12 series …
Following 1939's "The Phantom Stage", the last of 12 series westerns made at Universal by Trem Carr and Paul Malvern starring Bob Baker, Universal kicked off a new series of six starring their new series-sign Johnny Mack Brown (who had already starred in three Universal serials with one more to go.) Baker was now odd-man-out at the studio as his contract had been with Trem Carr, and Carr and associate Malvern had moved over to Monogram to begin a series of four "Tailspin Tommy" features. Universal, usually late to the party anyway, added Baker and comedian Fuzzy Knight to the first-six Brown films to form a trio angle along the lines of Republic's highly successful "Three Mesquiteers" series, but there were no continuing roles in these films---they even killed Baker off in the 2nd film---and Baker's 2nd-lead soon went to 3rd-lead (behind Knight) and then to "gone" after the sixth film. When Bob Baker was next seen in a film at Universal, it was as the uncredited bus driver in Abbott and Costello's "Ride 'Em Cowboy" in 1942. From this point onward, Fuzzy Knight was the sidekick in every B-series western made by Universal until they closed shop on series westerns and serial production when they merged with International Pictures to become Universal-International: In this one, Steve Hayden, working undercover, comes to Denton to help restore law and order. The men secretly responsible for the lawlessness are Big Bill Tanner and Melenkthy Culp, the town banker. (A pairing made in filmdom heaven since the meaner and more desperate the two become, the more enjoyable they are to watch.) Judith Lantry arrives from back east to check on her ranch holdings ran by her cousin Bill "Cousin Willie" Strong, and Tanner and Culp, fearful she will discover the faked mortgages they put on her property, send henchman Ortega to do away with her, but Steve saves her life. She and Cousin Willie put Steve in charge of the ranch, and he quickly fires her crooked foreman Lon, and hires Clem Waters and a whole new group of cowhands. Steve captures Lon with 200 head of horses belong to Judith, and he confesses and implicates Tanner and Culp.

Remade by Trem Carr and Paul Malvern's "Lone Star Productions" in 1935 as "Desert Trail" starring John Wayne.Cowhand Steve Kendall(Bob Steele) and slick eastern confidence man "Boston" Harry Manners(Ted Adams)become friends but are rivals for the hand of fair Juanita(Josephine Velez), a girl whose hands are influenced by whoever deposited the last trinket in them. Nikkos(Al Bridge) deposits a trinket from a robbery/murder committed by he and Bud Warren(Eddie Fetherston), but Juanita, when pressed, points the finger at Boston Harry, as it is hard for a girl such as Juanita who gets many trinkets to keep up with just who, among the general population, added to her trinket collection and when. The locals are about to string Harry up but he is saved by Steve and they light out for friendlier surroundings in another town. There, they meet storekeeper Ma Warren(Florence Turner) and her pretty daughter Sally(Frances Morris) and Steve and Harry start vieing for her attentions, with Steve in the lead after he sings "I Fell in Love With You" to her, and Harry hasn't much to counter with as Sally is not a trinket-favoring girl. But not all is well, for Sally's brother Bud is also part of the family storekeeping business, when he isn't pulling robberies in near-by towns with his accented partner Nikkos, and he begins to fret over the possibility that Steve and Harry will learn that he was part of the affair in the other town that led to Steve and Harry's hasty departure. Nikkos has a plan to ensure that doesn't happen. (This film's leading lady, Frances Morris, died on December 2, 2003 in Santa Clarita, Ca. at the age of 98.She had a long and varied career in films and television, including many B-westerns in the 1930's, and as "Sarah Kent" on the first television episode of the "Superman" series starring George Reeves. She was first married to silent-film actor Russell Parker and later to Antrim Short.)
