This renegade, before starting on an expedition to the unexplored interior, trifles with the affections of Maida Verne, a French Sudanese girl, who has been educated at the mission, and becomes something of a favorite with the English colony. She is engaged to the son of a native king, a young man modernized by an education at Oxford, but still retaining the best of native ideals. He is almost unnaturally magnanimous in stepping aside when he believes that Maida is to wed the Englishman, but he discovers that the latter has a wife living while the two are on the expedition returning from a successful search for ivory. The two men fight in a canoe, and the native is apparently drowned. The renegade escapes, but the native returns to their starting point in time to save Maida and execute terrible vengeance.

He escapes from the angry islanders with the pearls, but after his return to Honolulu, Enid's cold manner and his own conscience effect a change in him, and he soon catches a steamer back to the island. The Intrigue is a surviving 1916 silent film drama produced by Pallas Pictures and released through Paramount Pictures. Frank Lloyd directed the film which was written by Julia Crawford Ivers and photographed by her son James Van Trees. The star is young Lenore Ulric and a young unknown King Vidor makes one of his earliest appearances in a film as an actor. The movie is also one of the earliest surviving films of Vidor's wife Florence. The film is extant at the Library of Congress along with several early Lloyd directed films from 1915/16.

King Wallis Vidor (February 8, 1894 – November 1, 1982) was an American film director, film producer, and screenwriter whose career spanned nearly seven decades. In 1979, he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award for his "incomparable achievements as a cinematic creator and innovator." He was nominated five times for a Best Director Oscar, and won eight international film awards during his career. Vidor's best known films include The Big Parade (1925), The Crowd (1928), Stella Dallas (1937), and Duel in the Sun (1946). (He is not related to fellow director Charles Vidor)
