Universal's 16th sound-era serial (following "The Jungle Mystery" and preceding "Clancy of the Mounted", both starring Tom Tyler) was based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short story (loosely adapted), and opens with a special train carrying gold bullion from the Golconda Mine, that is stopped by henchmen, working secretly for Sam Slater (J. Frank Glendon), partner of Potter Hood (Francis Ford), in the mine ownership. Laying down portable tracks, the bandits take the train off of the main line, hide it in an abandoned mine shaft, steal the gold, and pick up their make-shift tracks, leaving a mystery in their wake. Potter's son Tom Hood (Frank Albertson), just home from college, determines to solve the mystery with the aid of his pal Bob Collins (football great Ernie Nevers.) They board the gold-shipment special train on its next run. Newspaper reporter Betty Moore (Cecilia Parker)and her friend Kate Bland (Caryl Lincoln)are in a car driving along a road that parallels the train tracks, when Bob is attacked by henchman Dirk (Tom London) and, while fighting, Dirk's revolver goes off, shatters the windsheild of Betty's Car, blinding her and sending her car toward the onrushing train, sending all participants directly into chapter two called "Roaring Death,"...which can be seen at this theatre next week.

In this railroad story a city girl, visiting her uncle and aunt in the country town, falls in love with the operator at the railway station. Her uncle, a cross old owl, disapproves of having young men call on her. She finds the telephone handy in talking with her new beau, but is detected by the aunt and uncle. A delayed order is received by the operator to hold the train until the President's special passes. The train has just gone and he telephones his sweetheart to flag it, as her uncle's home adjoins the railroad track. She drops the receiver, rushes to the kitchen, gets a lantern, covers it with her uncle's red bandanna and she runs out of the house. Then she climbs the fence and embankment and gets to the track just in time to stop the train. All manner and things happen to her while she is doing this, and the ending of the story is both ingenious and entertaining. The lovers are, of course, reconciled.
