Jake Barstow returns to the west after a spree in New York …
Jake Barstow returns to the west after a spree in New York and Chicago. He meets Chuck Peters and Piute Charley, two of his old cronies, and boastingly shows them clippings that relate the stories of his exploits in the metropolitan centers. Tapping his pocketbook significantly, Barstow says it's time to get some more of the easy money to be had thereabouts. On the day following his return, Barstow visits the San Remo ranch and endeavors to interest Roger King, its millionaire owner, in his Greenback mine. King instructs his youthful superintendent, Larry Kerwin, to visit the mine, and if it proves to be the bonanza that Barstow says it is, to pay him $10,000 for a half interest. Barstow figures that Larry will draw the money and carry it on his person. Shortly before the two are to meet, Larry is held up by two masked men in his hotel room. They get nothing; the money is held in trust by the local bank, and instructions have been given not to pay it to Barstow except upon Larry's written order. Barstow and Larry start for the mine back in the hills. At a point where the trail divides, Larry takes out his knife, and, unobserved by Barstow, slits the oats sack carried by their pack burro. Proceeding to the secret mine, Barstow trusses Larry up and compels him to sign an order for the $10,000. Meanwhile King and his daughter, Madge, alarmed for Larry's safety, have secured a guide in the town and follow as fast as their horses can travel. The guide is Chuck, and he has had orders to prevent the Kings from reaching the mine. If necessary Piute Charley is to resort to extreme measures in assisting Chuck to carry out Barstow's orders. At the fork in the trail, Madge discovers the oats strewn along the ground in the opposite direction from that taken by their guide. Following up this clue they reach the entrance to the mine, and are fired upon by Chuck and Piute Charley. Barstow also takes a hand in the game. After King has done for his confederates, Madge gets the drop on Barstow and disarms him. Barstow then boasts that they will never see Larry alive, because he has lighted a fuse leading to a box of explosives back in the mine. Madge rescues Larry not more than ten seconds before the whole country rocks with the force of the explosion.

The Resurrection of Gold Bar

It is Barbara Brent's …
It is Barbara Brent's birthday and under her breakfast plate her father has just placed a jewel box. As he sits waiting for Barbara to appear, he recalls the circumstances of her birth, and in memory he is living again in the boom mining town of Gold Bar. As though it were yesterday, he pictures his rapture over the tiny bundle the nurse has placed in his arms and his triumphal entry into the open street that the miners can feast their eyes upon his daughter. His anguish over the death of Barbara's mother, the sudden pinching off of the gold vein and the desertion of the town by all of its inhabitants, recur vividly to him. Barbara coaxes her father and Congressman John Wallace, her fiancé, to take her to the deserted town of Gold Bar as a birthday treat. Arriving, with provisions for several days' stay, they come across an old prospector who has lived all these years near the scene of the strike. He is suffering from hunger and exposure. They make him comfortable and then set out to explore the deserted grocery of Dick Dingle, now a convict. One of the floor boards gives way under Barbara's weight and when she draws up her foot, she finds a gold nugget clinging to the heel of her shoe. A search reveals a sack of nuggets which the jolly conspirators bury near the creek where they will be unearthed by the old prospector. Events now follow one another in rapid succession. While the prospector is off to bank his discovered gold, Barbara, her father, and her fiancé, actually discover gold and file a claim in the name of the old prospector with Barbara as his partner. News of the find spreads like wildfire and there is a general rush for the deserted town by eager gold seekers. In a fight to prevent the stealing of their claim, Barbara and the old prospector hold off Dingle, who has been released from prison, and his confederates, until Wallace can return from the land office. Dingle is taken in hand by the sheriff and prosperity once more returns to Gold Bar.

All Jones' efforts and the attempts of the girls to make the acquaintance of Mr. X at first prove fruitless. Then, following a new plan, Mary becomes a close friend of the purser, the only person on board besides Mr. X knowing the combination of the safe in his stateroom. At the dance on the last night of the voyage numerous articles of jewelry disappear, and when the discovery is made Mary is accused of the crime because of an incriminating necklace found hidden in her girdle. While a search of Mary's room is being made by the ship's officers and Mona, who claims to have lost a diamond brooch, Jones enters and tells of having seen Mr. X steal up to his stateroom during the dance, put a suspicious looking package in his safe and later, on deck, slip the necklace in Mary's girdle. To avoid making a false step it is decided that the purser shall search the safe. Mona watches at the door to give the alarm should Mr. X arrive. As the safe door swings open, she calls a warning and the purser runs to the door. Mona who really has the stolen valuables in her handkerchief, hurriedly slips them in the safe and extracts the fortification map. Mr. X, accused of the thefts, notices the loss of the map, and immediately takes on a mask of silence. At Mona's suggestion, the captain decides that since the stolen articles have been recovered and to avoid scandal for the line, no prosecution will be made.

Major Dean's developed mental powers have enabled him …
Major Dean's developed mental powers have enabled him to give demonstrations in thought-suggestion. Interested in character types, the major, who is an army surgeon, visits a notorious dance hall owned by Lorenzo. The surgeon is struck by the beauty of Mabel, one of the dance hall girls. Mabel lives in deadly fear of Lorenzo. Due to the interest he takes in her Major Dean again demonstrates his wonderful power of mental suggestion by causing the girl to lay down the glass she raised to her lips. Later, a fight is started in the dance hall. All lights are shot out. Mabel is stunned by a bullet. Seizing her in his arms, Major Dean takes her to his home. The following morning finds the girl still unconscious. Major Dean's diagnosis leads him to believe that due to the wound caused by the bullet, a pressure on certain brain cells has wiped all memory of the past from Mabel's mind. Realizing that despite her condition, the girl's subconscious mind is capable o£ registering impressions, the surgeon forces upon Mabel's mind the thought she is, and always has been, his daughter. The girl is possessed of this belief when she recovers. She later accompanies Major Dean to the western army post to which he has been assigned. Sergeant Whitney, an old soldier, is stationed at the post. The man is struck by the wonderful resemblance which Mabel bears to his daughter who, several years previous, had been enticed from her home by a gambler. Although Whitney has never seen the man, he has vowed to find and kill him. Meanwhile, Lorenzo learns what has become of his former victim. Resolved to regain her, he leaves for the west. Arriving at the army post, Lorenzo demands that Dean surrender Mabel. Knowing the girl will not recognize the man, the surgeon allows her to comfort him. Mabel shrinks from Lorenzo in repulsion. Suspecting the truth, Lorenzo later waylays his former victim while she is out riding and endeavors to revive in her mind the memory of her life with him. At the same instant, Major Dean is obsessed by a sense of impending danger. The surgeon gazes out of the window through a pair of field glasses. He discovers Lorenzo talking to Mabel. Aware of the man's nefarious scheme, Major Dean concentrates his powerful will in an effort to so influence Mabel's mind as to enable her to withstand Lorenzo's hypnotic influence. The girl, who had been wavering, receives the message emanating from the major's mind. It causes her to shrink from her former master with the assertion she has no recollection of the incidents he has mentioned. The opportune arrival of Sergeant Whitney prevents Lorenzo from seizing Mabel and carrying her away. That night, Lieutenant Sibley, a young army officer who has fallen in love with Mabel, asks the major for her hand. Feeling it to be his duty, Dean informs Sibley of the girl's past. The surgeon declares it is his belief that Mabel is the daughter of Sergeant Whitney, and that Lorenzo is the man who enticed her from home. So great is his love, that Sibley vows to marry Mabel in spite of what has happened. Unknown to the two, Whitney has overheard the story. Mad with hate, he seeks Lorenzo. Unaware of his impending doom, Lorenzo resolves to make one supreme effort to regain Mabel. Seated by his window, the man fixes his mind upon Mabel with every ounce of power he possesses. Although fast asleep, the girl's mind receives the command sent forth by her former master. As though in a trance, she dons her clothes. Again the sense of danger overcomes Major Dean. He hastens towards Mabel's room. Just at this instant, Whitney enters Lorenzo's room. The rage-maddened father engages the gambler in a death struggle. While this combat rages, Mabel stands as though petrified. Securing possession of Whitney's revolver, Lorenzo shoots, wounding the old soldier mortally. Although he has received his death wound, Whitney's consuming hatred gives him strength to continue the struggle. A sudden twist, and the sergeant secures a vise-like grip on Lorenzo's throat. He forces the man back towards the bed. Mabel awakens with a start. In answer to Major Dean's anxious query, she replies that a bad dream had caused her to walk in her sleep. In Lorenzo's room, Whitney draws back from the silent form on the bed. The soldier attempts to reach the door, but his strength fails. The man staggers and crumples to the floor.
