Based on and built around the west coast radio program, "The Hollywood Barn Dance", although no members of the 1947 cast of the program are in the film, but the better-known (on a national scale) Ernest Tubb and His Texas Troubadors, Jack Guthrie and Jimmy and Leon Short more than make up for that. The slight plot, around 18 songs, begins with Tubb and his band searching for $2000 needed to rebuild their town chuch after it burned down while they were rehearsing in it. The Captain from Köpenick

The true story of shoemaker …
The true story of shoemaker Wilhelm Voigt, who is released from prison after many years of hard labor only to find himself in the midst of a Prussian catch-22: To get a residence permit (passport), he must have a job, but he can only get a job if he already has a residence permit. No one in the Prussian-German bureaucracy of 1906 feels compelled to help him: Everything must go by the book! Out of desperation, Voigt breaks into a police station to steal the permit but is caught and again goes to jail. The prison warden loves everything military and has the prisoners re-enact famous battles. Once Voigt is released he has a deep knowledge of military uniforms, military ranks and military speak that he can use to his advantage. In Berlin he buys a used captain's uniform, puts it on and marches towards a platoon of soldiers standing guard. He commands them to follow him to Koepenick, a suburb of Berlin. He is so convincing they follow his orders! Once they arrive he has the soldiers stage a coup to takeover the Town Hall so he can commandeer the much sought-after permit, but is told by the staff the permits now are only issued in Berlin. He pockets all the cash in the town hall safe, orders his soldiers to take the train back to Berlin and promptly disappears. When Voigt sees wanted posters offering a reward for the capture of the perpetrator of the Koepenick Caper, he goes to the Chief of Police, confesses his deed and returns all the money down to the last penny. All the police in the station erupt in laughter, slap him on the back, offer him drinks and congratulate him for the best practical joke they have ever heard of. Voigt is now famous and even the Kaiser wants to hear his story.

"The Roaring West" was Universal's 27th sound-era …
"The Roaring West" was Universal's 27th sound-era serial (between "The Call of the Savage" and "Tailspin Tommy in the Great Air Mystery") and the second of the five serials Buck Jones made at Universal, with his sixth serial "White Eagle-1941" coming from Columbia. The Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin also put out two different Big Little Books, "Buck Jones in 'The Roaring West'-number 1174 and "Buck Jones in 'The Fighting Rangers' --- number 1188 --- based on this serial with over 100 production stills from the serial in each book. Possibly, but not likely, someday the sources that insist on putting the Pat O'Brien from Warners into the cast of Universal serials will either actually see this (and other Universal serials) and learn that the actor in those was one Pat J. O'Brien, who was nearly always billed just as Pat O'Brien. If they don't care to bother with watching the films, there is the possibility that some kind soul will scan and send them some stills of both Pat O'Briens. The opening chapter of this serial --- "The Land Rush" --- finds cowpunchers Montana Larkin and Jinglebob Morgan riding into new territory to join an impending land rush. They carry a mail-order catalog hiding a map giving the location of valuable mineral deposits in the land-rush territory. They stop at the ranch of Jim Parker where Montana saves Parker's daughter Mary from a wild horse. The gabby Jinglebob plays poker with ranch foreman Gil Gillespie and reveals the secret of the map. Gil has his henchman, Hank, steal the map, copy it and return it without being seen. Montana, Jinglebob, Parker, Mary, Gillespie and Ann Hardy, a Parker niece, and some stock-footage land-rushers gather the next day for the land rush, where Montana learns that Gillespie has a copy of the map. Montana is riding hard to beat Gillespie to the mineral deposits but Mary falls from her horse and Montana picks her up on the run but the usually-reliable Silver falls over an unseen embankment, and Montana and Mary are underneath as the other horses and wagons plunge after them. That ends chapter one, but things get worse in chapter two as they find that Gillespie has beaten them to the site and has already staked nine claims. But Gillespie, the cad, is willing to share the claims with old man Parker if he will turn Mary over to Gillespie as his bride. 13 more chapters of such high-handed villainy occur before Montana gets total control of the situation.

He pleads for a promotion in her eyes also and after a few moments' hesitation she consents to become his wife. The wedding takes place in due time, but scarcely are they pronounced man and wife when Prescott bursts into the room with the news that the men are needed to fight. Hastily calling his men to arms he is confronted by Jane, who passionately declares that she will not let her husband go to war. Prescott finally persuades her that it is her duty to let him go. After bidding him a tearful farewell she collapses in her mother's arms. We next see Prescott and Jack under the direction of General Warren, throwing up the earthworks on Bunker Hill, in the middle of the night, while the British across the river are sleeping peacefully. The morning of the 17th of June, the Britishers moved forward to the attack and charged the hill in marching order. The command went down the American line, "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes." They waited and when the volley belched forth the British fled down the hill leaving their dead and wounded on the field. A second time the British regulars fled before the deadly fire of the Americans. A third time they formed, this time with Gen. Howe at their bead, and charged the hill. But the Americans had but one volley left, their ammunition was exhausted, and fighting with whatever weapons they could muster, such as spades, picks and even stones, they slowly gave way before the British. Jack, in capturing a British flag, was severely wounded and taken to a friendly cottage, where Jane soon arrived to nurse him back to health. General Washington arriving to take charge of the American army, and hearing of Jack's bravery, took occasion to thank him in the presence of his staff, to the great gratification of his charming little wife.
