After the success of his 2 sitcoms, The Dick Van Dyke Show and The New Dick Van Dyke Show, comedian Dick Van Dyke, just like many others, decided to try his hand at a variety show. Titled Van Dyke and Company, it premiered in September 1976. It featured Dick Van Dyke standing in front of several doors, one of which a guest star would come out of. The show was best known for Dick's pantomime acting and a recurring skit about the dumbest family in the world, coincidently named "The Bright Family". Van Dyke & Co also featured appearances by the Los Angeles Mime Company. However, the show, like many other variety shows at the time, was cancelled rather quickly. Dick Van Dyke would later create a new sitcom, The Van Dyke Show.

This 1975 version of the Smothers Brothers variety series on NBC was a ratings disaster (NBC was already in ruins two years earlier when Rowan And Martin's Laugh-In ended its five and a half year run), This version did include Comedy Hour alums Leigh French and Pat Paulsen, and featured writer/cast member Steve Martin (who had worked with the Smothers in their 1967-69 series as a writer, and would go on after the cancellation of this variety series to Saturday Night Live). The 1975 edition was executive produced by Joe Hamilton (Carol Burnett's husband at that time, who also produced Burnett's variety show on CBS). Despite a creative turnaround in the last four episodes, NBC cancelled this version in May of '75.
