Bloomington, Minnesota, 1967: Jewish physics lecturer Larry Gopnik is a serious and a very put-upon man. His daughter is stealing from him to save up for a nose job, his pot-head son, who gets stoned at his own bar-mitzvah, only wants him round to fix the TV aerial and his useless brother Arthur is an unwelcome house guest. But both Arthur and Larry get turfed out into a motel when Larry's wife Judy, who wants a divorce, moves her lover, Sy, into the house and even after Sy's death in a car crash they are still there. With lawyers' bills mounting for his divorce, Arthur's criminal court appearances and a land feud with a neighbour Larry is tempted to take the bribe offered by a student to give him an illegal exam pass mark. And the rabbis he visits for advice only dole out platitudes. Still God moves in mysterious - and not always pleasant - ways, as Larry and his family will find out.

Joseph is upset that his mother who just died was cremated, not buried according to Jewish tradition. His blind father, Sol, old and feeble, carries the urn containing Sophie's ashes everywhere, talking to her, listening to her, misplacing her. Sol is certain the "urine doctor" (urologist) planted a listening device up his keister enabling the Feds to spy on the family. Sol also claims to have been abducted by aliens who forced him to have sex and create a half-human, half-alien, "like Leonard Nimoy." Joseph's ex-wife, Zoe, now remarried to Bubba on her farm, has come in for the funeral. Their son, Daniel, an MBA graduate, returns from a two year stay in Israel, walks in the door dressed like a Hassid, with full beard, hat, black coat, the whole works. Joseph, a secular Jew, can't believe his eyes. He had expected Daniel to return to run his business. Sol relays Sophie's telepathic message that Daniel's future is in a hot place surrounded by Jews? Daniel: "Israel?" Sol: "Miami." Meanwhile, Joseph's ex-con cousin, Albert, shows up with his weird friend, Feister, who, from time to time sneak in dead bodies, storing one corpse in a trunk in the living room. Albert, whose liver is shot, is delighted to learn he shares the same blood type with Joseph, while Feister eagerly assembles his "instruments" awaiting the go-ahead from Albert. We answer these important questions: Why are Albert and Feister dragging in dead bodies, and why do they laugh uproariously when they talk about Joseph's "donation?" Will Zoe be able to convince "City Boy" Joseph to come live on the farm with her? And what about Daniel? Is his conversion for real? And Sol? Is a home in his future or could he be abducted again? Permanently?

The Wedding Bells is an American comedy-drama television series that aired on Fox from March 2 to April 13, 2007. The series was greenlighted after the network became interested in a series centered on wedding planners. The network approached David E. Kelley to create the show, and he essentially remade a rejected pilot he created for ABC in 2004 entitled DeMarco Affairs which starred Selma Blair, Lindsay Sloane, and Sabrina Lloyd as three sisters who inherit a wedding planner service. Though the show had a moderately strong premiere, it faded in the ratings and was cancelled after seven episodes had been produced and five episodes were aired.

Harry Stone (Danny Aiello), a formerly top notch director, has had three disastrous movies in a row. Facing dismissal from the top perch of Hollywood and finacial ruin from back taxes, he is forced to take on a very commercial and, he believes, ridiculous movie. Now as he faces the film's release and, he believes, another total flop which will complete his ruin, he meets up with his son and daughter and his former wives (which includes Dyan Cannon) to examine his life and his future. The film examines the turmoil a movie director goes through with a film release. His agent (Jerry Stiller) assures him that he has a hit, while those around him wince (as does the audience) at the thought of the movie within the movie. The movie is "The Pickle", a supposedly social satire where a bunch of super-white kids from Kansas take vegetables into space via a super cucumber and land on an Earth-like planet where everyone lives only on beef and die at age 49. As shown in the excerpts of the film, Little Richard stars as the President of the planet who has 6 months to live, Ally Sheedy heads up the Kansas contingent, and Griffin Dunne is the President's aide who falls in love with Sheedy.
