It starred Jim Davis as fireman Wes Cameron (much later cast as Jock Ewing on CBS's Dallas), and Lang Jeffries as the fireman Skip Johnson. Nancy Rennick and Mary K. Cleary each appeared in twenty-four episodes as Patty Johnson and Susan Johnson, the wife and daughter, respectively of Skip Johnson. The series was produced by Screen Gems, with directors Dann Cahn and William Witney. Rescue 8 produced seventy-four half-hour episodes. The first season ran on Tuesday evenings, and the second season on Wednesdays.

Mexican bandit Yaqui Jack and his men hold up a stage coach, kill the driver and guard and are robbing the passengers, ranch owner Matt Quigg, his son Lute and Linda, when they in turn are ambushed by Lefty and his gang. Yaqui Jack is shot but escapes and reaches the camp of Webb Dunham, who treats his wounds. They separate with Webb going to the ranch of his brother who has been murdered. Suspicion turns on Matt, who claims title to the brother's ranch, and has Webb brutally beaten after ordering him from the property. Webb goes to Matt's saloon, where Linda sings, and she and Webb had been in love in California. Webb retaliates against Matt for his beating, and Matt hires Lefty to kill Webb. Lefty, waiting in Webb's cabin to ambush him, is overpowered by Yaqui Jack who has returned to help the man who aided him, and asks Webb to join him and his friends in their fight to free Mexico. Matt, Lute, Linda and Lefty and the sheriff are kidnapped by Yaqui Indians, as is Webb, who shot a Yaqui grabbing Linda. They are taken across the border to be held for ransom, where Lefty confesses to Webb that he had killed Webb's brother on Matt's orders. Lute, with no intentions of returning, persuades his father to let him go across the border to get the ransom money but Linda, whom he had married the night before, refuses to go with him. Matt learns of the intended deceit deceit, and accidentally kills Lute. Yaqui Jack is killed as he dies the Mexican Army authorities who escort Webb, Linda, the sheriff and the now-demented Matt back across the border.

The investigation is opposed by Mrs. Ballard, head of the prison, whose moronic brother, Cletus, is keeper of the prison bloodhounds. Nora Collins, once engaged to Jeff, but now an inmate because she had stolen to protect her brother, is resentful of prison methods and particularly bitter against the sadistic methods of a brutal prison guard named Darcy. Honey Blake and Kate unsuccessfully try to use Cletus in an escape attempt. But they try a second escape using Jeff, Nora and Mrs. Ballard as hostages. Mabry, Kate's gangland lover, hears of the escape and knowing she will go where she had hidden $50,000 gets there ahead of her.

Slip, Sach, Whitey, Butch and Chuck witness a warehouse robbery, and are arrested and jailed on suspicion. Gabe Moreno, their lawyer-friend gets them released on bail. Since the charge of suspicion is one that the prosecutors appear to believe can be easily proved, the gang is awaiting trail, when Whitey, a short-wave radio fan, picks up information that leads him to believe that instructions for the warehouse robbery and others are given by an inmate in the penitentiary to his pals on the outside via short-wave radio. When the five go on trail, Slip and Sach plead guilty so that they may be imprisoned and the other three are given probation. Once in the Big House, Slip and Sach learn immediately learn that two notorious gangsters, Pretty Boy Gleason and Benny the Blood, expected to arrive at the prison have received a last-minute stay-of-sentence, so they decide to pose as Pretty Boy and Benny, in order to be readily accepted among the Cons and learn which of them is the one sending out the robbery instructions. They meet the leader, Bat Armstrong, and learn from Whitey, who has intercepted one of Bat's short-wave messages, that a prison break is planned. But before they can do much about that, the real Pretty Boy and Benny are imprisoned, and Slip and Sach are now known by Bat and his friends to be impostors.

Born in San Francisco, Rhodes starting her acting career with the Morrison Stock Company, a local theatre troupe. She was originally discovered by Kalem Company, who gave her a one-year contract in 1913. She primarily acted in comedic shorts, but also acted in the drama Perils at Sea. After her contract ended, she began singing in nightclubs, and was approached by Al Christie, then working for the Nestor Film Company. She was signed and made weekly "polite" comedic shorts through the next year.
