Pacing up and down his narrow cell, 341 was interrupted by …
Pacing up and down his narrow cell, 341 was interrupted by the arrival of one of the guards. The warden had received papers from the governor permitting 341 to go out on probation. He notified the guard of this, and requested that 341 be brought to his office before leaving. In the long hours of his confinement 341 had often brooded over the circumstances which had sent him to prison, and planned over and over again how he would revenge himself upon those who he believed had sent him up. With the change from the prison uniform to civilian clothes 341, too, becomes changed. He goes into the warden's office, and is given what possessions he had when he was placed behind the walls. Arriving in the city, 341 secures a room and immediately plans the execution of his long-hoped-for vengeance. His mind reverts to the days of the past in which he and his chum, a young doctor, both sought to win the same girl. 341 was the lucky suitor, and his cave man ways won the girl. Possession dulled the desire, however, and 341 became a heavy drinker, leaving his wife alone the greater part of the time. The young doctor took his defeat nobly and for a long time did not even see the girl. 341 goes from bad to worse, and spends all of his time drinking and gambling. The doctor sees the wife neglected and is unable to resist bestowing upon her his sympathy. 341 finds the two together one day and angrily warns the doctor away. A child is born to the couple. The father, half drunk in a gambling house, refuses to go home. The doctor learns of the wife's condition, and goes to the house himself. Through his efforts the wife is pulled through the ordeal, while 341 refuses to go home at all. With the break of day, the party breaks up and 341 arrives home to find his wife and the doctor alone. In his drunken condition he mistakes the relation between the two, and, pulling a gun, threatens to send them to a place where they can carry on their love making unhindered. The butler, hearing the discussion, calls the police, who arrive on the scene as 341 starts to shoot the doctor. In the struggle one of the policemen is shot and falls to the floor. It is for this crime that 341 was sent to the pen. Brooding upon and magnifying his imaginary wrongs, 341 secures a loaded revolver and determines to be revenged. He spends many days in his search, and is invariably followed and hunted by officers who know he is a paroled convict. He begins to feel the effect of the constant tension, but finally locates his wife and the doctor. He watches them through a lighted window and sees the little child go in to bid her parents good night and hears the little one ask its mother where her daddy is. The mother tells the child that her real daddy is in heaven and the little one goes to bed. A reaction sets in, and 341 realizes that the woman is now happier than he could ever have hoped to make her. Thoughts of vengeance are forgotten, and he desires to get back to prison. He sneaks in the window and kisses the child without awakening her. As he comes from the grounds, he is suddenly halted by a bunch of cops, and the resentment against the police which he has felt since they hounded him, comes to the surface. He attacks them with fury, and before being overpowered, succeeds in putting several of them on the hospital list. A few days later the warden is called to receive another "guest" and discovers his old friend 341, who says he has come back home.

Esther Bourne, a public stenographer, desires to …
Esther Bourne, a public stenographer, desires to become a novelist. She realizes that one must creep before trying to walk, and sends short stories to the magazines. They are all returned as unsuitable, and she despairs. But Leonard Ames, writer and critic, who has rooms in the same building, encourages Esther to keep on trying. He warns her, however, that to depict life one must have lived and suffered. One day a girl applies for employment at Esther's office, and, on being refused, faints at the door. Esther revives her and learns her story. Her recent employer, Mason Downs, a promoter of mining enterprises, had taken advantage of the girl's situation to insult her. Only a knock on the door had saved her from further ill treatment at his hands. Afraid to return for her wages, she had sought employment in vain. Esther takes Dora Thomas home with her and installs her as housekeeper of the little flat. Then she goes to Downs' office for the girl's wages. The promoter takes her card, and later, being still without a stenographer when an important report has to be written, calls on Esther at her office. He also has an employee follow her home to learn her address, because Dora is there. Dick Stuart, a mining engineer, brings to Esther's office a report to be copied. When it is completed he takes it to Downs, who has engaged him to report on a worthless mine. Downs tries to bribe Stuart to make a favorable report, and, failing, determines to forge a new report above the engineer's signature. He takes the work to Esther, who, recognizing that there is something queer about the transaction, calls up Stuart. He tells Downs what he thinks of him, and the latter, enraged, hounds Esther as a stenographer who betrays the confidence of her employers. As a result she loses patronage and is forced to close her office. Stuart becomes a steady caller at the flat, and Esther sees him falling in love with Dora. At last Dora discovers the state of affairs and, through gratitude to Esther, determines to go away. She answers an offer of employment and finds herself in Downs' clutches. The promoter tricks her into sending for Esther, who calls up Stuart and goes at once to the house, where, as she expects, Downs tells her: "You robbed me of a fortune and you are going to pay !" Using all her wits, she cajoles him until he is off guard for an instant, then sets fire to the house and frees Dora. Under the title of "The Love That Failed," Esther writes her life story and wins fame.
