Navy men William Clark, Rico Ferrari and Danny Smith …
Navy men William Clark, Rico Ferrari and Danny Smith have struck up a friendship based on their misadventures despite Bill being a chief petty officer and the other two merely seamen. They are on a 48 hour liberty in San Francisco. Each is looking forward to the liberty, but each encounters problems there. Bill has been pre-engaged to a showgirl named Ginger for six years, she who he truly loves. She believes his continual enlistment is an excuse not to marry her. As such, she dumps him for - gasp - a civilian. Rico's mother wants to get remarried, but Rico's appearance may thwart her plans. And Danny hasn't told his friends that his father is a navy rear admiral as he doesn't want to appear to get any special treatment. His professional destiny is to go to Annapolis like his father did and as his father did. But Danny's bigger problem is his innocent sister Susan, who wants to take up with showman Wendell Craig, who, starring in a navy themed show called "Hit the Deck", promises her a part. Danny, based on comments by one of Wendell's featured performers Carol Pace, is afraid that Wendell's audition process is more of a casting couch. The three friends vow to help the others over their crises, but their misadventures continue - especially in their attempt to protect Susan - which could cause problems with the naval shore patrol, which in turn could be an issue with Rear Admiral Smith. Along the way, some possible romances ensue - between Rico and Susan, and between Danny and Carol - if only their misunderstandings wouldn't get in the way.

New York sophisticates David Smith and Ann Smith née Krausheimer have been lovingly and passionately married for three years, or so they believed. They are told individually that due to a technicality - an unresolved municipal and state jurisdictional issue at the time of their supposed marriage - their wedding was not legal, and as such they are not really married. Despite David saying earlier in the day that if he had to do his life all over again that he would not have married her (even though he loves her), it is Ann that decides not to marry David this second time around due to an action, or in reality inaction, by David in reaction to the news of their marriage being invalid. While Ann goes about her life as a supposedly single woman (which includes calling herself Ann Krausheimer), David does whatever he can to win Ann back. But winning Ann's hand may be difficult as part of Ann's new life is dating other men. One of those other men and the most serious is David's best friend and business partner, Jefferson Custer. Ann and Jeff's relationship quickly gets to the point where Jeff introduces her to his visiting parents, with whom Ann and Jeff are going on a skiing vacation to Lake Placid. David hopes to exploit that vacation in order to win Ann back.

Barry and Oliver take a suite at the Casa Barbara, where they hire the house detective, Parkyakarkus to find the slipper's owner but he bungles the job. Oliver reminds Barry that he will lose his mother's $3,000,000 inheritance if he weds before the age of thirty. Mitzi and Pauline also register at the hotel, hoping to induce Dr. Molnac, performing there, to give Mitzi an audition. Also arriving are Mitzi's mother, Countess Martos and her wealthy friend Mrs. Penner and her son Joe, and the mothers have intentions of Joe marrying Mitzi. Barry finally meets Mitzi, and proposes marriage at a date three years in the future. To break up the romance, Joe and Parky steal Mitzi's shoe wardrobe and she, thinking Barry did it, rushes to his room in her negligee, upbraids him and stalks out. He, in his dressing gown, follows her to her room and they are about to reconcile when Mitzi's mother and Joe and his mother enter. Barry hides in another room and overhears Mitzi's mother blandly suggesting that Mitzi marry Joe. Mitzi, not pleased at this prospect, tells them she is already married and Barry, taking the cue, enters and plays the role of the new husband. Mitzi's mother promptly has them booked into the bridal suite. Pauline and Oliver arrange a wedding party with Dr. Molnac's troupe performing and Pauline, still scheming to get Mitzi an audition, hires Joe and Parky to kidnap Molnac's singer, Susan. Mitzi is a smash hit, and Barry's mother arrives and announces she had lied about his age and he is really thirty, and can get married without losing his inheritance.
