The actress is on her way to visit the Prince in his castle when she is stranded on a lonely road by an accident to her motor car. The Hillman happens along and takes her to Peak Hall. He is still young and handsome, but marked by the stern fanatical belief of his family that no member of it ever should leave the hills. In an exchange of confidence, the Hillman warns the actress not to visit the dissolute Prince, and she in turn tells him that for once he should try the broader life of the cities. Both heed the other's advice. She returns to the city, and he, in a brief period, follows. The Prince, still pursuing the actress, seeks to entangle the Hillman by throwing a notorious dancer in his path, but fails. Strangeway, the Hillman, proposes to Louise, the actress, but she withholds her answer. His brother comes from the hills to reclaim him, but his mission is vain. Again the Hillman proposes to Louise, who is always in the company of the Prince, and this time is accepted. Angered at his apparent loss of the actress, the Prince makes a scandalous remark about her at his club, which is resented with blows by the Hillman, whose love is all but crushed, when hurrying to Louise she admits what the Prince said is true. The Hillman returns to Peak Hill where a few months later as he is reading in a paper of the engagement of the actress and the Prince, she arrives at his home. She assures him that she is good, not bad, and that she did make the promise to the Prince when she believed he loved her, and both the Hillman and his brother receive her as one of them.

Mink Jones of Jonesville, is the lord high executioner and everything else. When Booze and Souse send Jack Worth, salesman for demon rum to Jonesville, he is met at the depot by Mink Jones and his daughter. Mink also in his capacity as expressman, receives a consignment of hymn books for the parson, and liquor for the hotel bar. Kneeland Pray and Doc Sawyer, the village prescription writer resolve to institute a vice committee to make Jonesville a temperance town, and incidentally make the village drug store an oasis in a desert of dryness. By mistake the case of liquor goes to the parson, and the box of hymn books goes to the village bar keeper. The committee call on the parson just as he is opening the box, and they are shocked to find the parson had received whiskey. They tell him they will say nothing of his private bar if he will join them in the temperance crusade. Doc Sawyer and Kneeland Pray do a thriving business. Mink Jones buys the village tavern because of the "dry" wave, and brings on some city girls to art as waitresses. These damsels fall in love with Doc Sawyer and the druggist, Kneeland Pray. While gamboling on beach, Mink Jones takes a moving picture of the doctor and the druggist with the maidens. Angered, because the lid has been tilted in some unknown way, the druggist and the doctor enlist the aid of the parson and raid Mink Jones' hotel in search of a "blind pig." The "blind pig" is discovered, and Mink Jones is arrested and heavily fined. However, he throws upon a screen moving pictures of the vice committee and the girls, and his fine is immediately remitted.

John Knutz, a chemist, thinks he has discovered the principles of life. In order to test his discovery, he arranges with an Egyptologist for the loan of a mummy. On this same day Mlle. Aimee, a Russian dancer, who is preparing to produce the Dance of Isis, arranges with the Egyptologist, White, to dance at his house in order to secure correctness of costumes. Mlle. Aimee, left alone in White's curio room, attacked by headache, takes a powder which affects her heart. She sits on the edge of the empty mummy case, loses consciousness, and falls into it. At this juncture the expressmen arrive to convey the mummy to Knutz's laboratory. When the dancer recovers consciousness, she steps forth from the case, and Knutz actually believes he has brought an Egyptian princess back to life. The dancer, unfortunately, cannot speak English and is unable to enlighten him. Knutz's wife appears upon the scene, and Mlle. Aimee, observing her jealously, tries to escape from the place and takes refuge in Neighbor Dobbs' studio. Finding no convenient place of concealment, she assumes a pose behind a large empty frame. At this moment Dobbs comes in with a committee who are passing upon his work for certain mural decorations, and they immediately close a contract on the strength of viewing the living picture they see. After they depart, Dobbs, who is simply silenced into astonishment, vents his admiration in Russian, which brings the dancer back to life. A withered old crone comes into the studio, selling matches, and Dobbs suggests turning the joke on Knutz for the curing of his jealous wife. He gets the old match seller to dress in the gowns of the princess, making a withered and fearful contrast to the beauty. She slips into Knutz's laboratory, and when he comes back, led by his jealous wife, they have a double shock at discovering the old woman in the mummy case. This settles Knutz's faith in his elixir of youth; he makes peace with his wife, and does not waste any more time upon idle experiments.

Henry Seymour, something of a genius, but thoroughly …
Henry Seymour, something of a genius, but thoroughly irresponsible, shamelessly subsists upon the earnings of his hard-working wife, who conducts a railway boarding-house. They have two children, who are inclined to be rather unruly. One day the husband and wife have a misunderstanding, and acting upon her acidly expressed wish (prompted by the passion of the moment), he departs, declaring he will never return. Mrs. Seymour is thoroughly conscious of the fact that she will be able to take care of the children and have one less to care for in her shiftless husband. Twelve years elapse. Without the restraining hand of a father, and the mother engrossed in business cares, the children become unmanageable and cause the mother many heartaches. In the interim, Seymour now repentant and reformed, has, through hard work and cleverness, become a wealthy miner in Alaska. By corresponding with friends, he learns of the deplorable affairs at home, and returns incognito to see if he can bring about adjustment and make reparation. He finds the character of the son and daughter discouraging, but ascertains his wife's attitude and is most favorably impressed. He obtains room and board, and pays a month in advance at the boarding house. That same evening the son loses everything at a gambling den. and at the suggestion of a pal secures possession of his mother's money for further wastage. She discovers him in the act and pleads, but he refuses to listen and leaves, and Seymour happens to be an unseen witness to this incident. The daughter goes for a walk with the unscrupulous friend of the son, against the mother's wishes. Seymour follows his son to the gambling room and wins the money from him. The son accuses him of cheating and draws a revolver, not knowing who he is. The father easily disarms him, returns the money and orders him home, on the way they hear screams and find that the daughter is repulsing the advances of her vicious companion. Thereupon the father compels the somewhat athletic son to give his pal a thrashing, which he does. He then locks arms with his son and daughter and brings them back to the house. The son, now overwhelmed with resentment, orders his father to leave the house, then the latter reveals his identity. All are dumbfounded; the wife joyfully embraces her husband, while the wayward son and impertinent daughter break down and beg forgiveness, which is granted.

Silk Hat Joe observes Mrs. Brainerd's jewels, ascertains the number and location of the room of herself and husband at the hotel, gains a peek therein by picking up a handkerchief which she dropped in the elevator, and which he restores to her. When later he meets them in a café, he observes that she is not wearing the pearls he envied so much, and concludes they must be in her room. The next scene shows him busily at work in Mrs. Brainerd's apartment. He finds the jewel-box and takes a necklace. He picks up a long stocking box from the dresser and observes it is filled with silk hose, which he jams in his outer pocket for luck. Then he rushes down the street, scents pursuit, and in his haste drops the box of stockings. Robert Hawley happens along, picks up the package, and after observing there is no name on it, concludes to send it to his fiancée, Doris. This lovely young lady, receiving the gift, is more than delighted. Of course, the Brainerds soon discover their loss, acquaint the police with the facts of the case as far as they know, and detectives are instructed to search for the pearls, likewise silk stockings of a certain make and marking. A few nights thereafter, Mr. and Mrs. Brainerd are dining at the St. Janis, and at the next table are seated Robert Hawley and his sweetheart. The latter, unconsciously, cocks her daintily-booted foot a trifle too high, exposing a plump limb with silk encasing. This catches the observant eye of Mrs. Brainerd, who informs her husband. Detectives are summoned; Robert and his would-be bride are arrested and taken to the station-house, where the latter submits to the humiliation of an examination by the matron. A flash-in shows a terrific struggle between the police and an unknown man in the alley. The result is that Silk Hat Joe is dragged into the stationhouse as the other parties are making their complaint. When he is searched, the necklace is revealed. The Brainerds recognize him; he admits the game is up, and poor little Doris, who received the gift of the silk stockings, gets them in reality, and is otherwise recompensed for her humiliation.
