Two young cowboys who have just met are shooting at a hawk. A passing train mistakes them for robbers and tosses a bag of money. When they go into town, Davey Bishop is shot in the leg by townspeople who believe they are robbers. Matt Dow explains what happened, the money is returned, and Davey is taken to the Swenson farm to recover. Matt becomes sheriff and begins to court Helga Swenson. When the bank is robbed one of the robbers recognizes Matt. The townsfolk develop doubts about Matt's loyalty. The ensuing posse chase is full of dangers and surprises.

With the town growing, Dr. Christian petitions the mayor for money to build a new hospital. But the mayor believes the good Doctor is too old-fashioned, and wants to replace the doctor with a more "modern" medicine man, along with commissioning a new highway to be built through the town. When the mayor's young daughter is injured in an accident, Dr. Christian is able to perform extremely delicate surgery without having the correct medical instruments. The town counsil is so impressed with Dr. Christian that they not only allow him to keep his job, but have been convinced to build the new hospital.

A judge who had taken part in the gold rush of 1849 hires an acting troupe to recreate the experience in this rather fanciful silent Western. The make-believe turns serious when a real gold-mine is discovered nearby and a local girl is kidnapped by a nasty gambler.
