During a snow storm in upstate New England, novelist Fred Blake, his wife Elizabeth and young son David are trapped inside their remote cabin in the hills. Their only contact with the outside world is their phone and a hired hand, Hank, who occasionally brings them the mail and supplies. The Blakes are surprised by the unexpected arrival of Fred's brother Charlie, gunman Benjie and blonde floozy Edna Rogers. Charlie suffers from gunshot wounds and needs immediate care. The trio had robbed a bank and are on the run from the police. The radio news reveal that bank robbers killed a bank guard and took some eighty thousand dollars. Fred is irritated about Charlie's arrival since Charlie always had problems with the law and also because he used to be Elizabeth's lover before he left her, allowing Fred to marry her. The wounded Charlie is lodged in the upstairs bedroom to recuperate. Young David, takes a strong liking to his wounded uncle, despite his parents' warning that Charlie is a no-good hoodlum. While Charlie recovers his strength, gunman Benjie pushes the Blakes around, barking orders and physically molesting the hosts. Charlie has to intervene several times to protect the Blakes but he's too weak to take on Benjie. The radio announces that roads are being cleared of snow by heavy snow-removal equipment and that plans are drawn by law enforcement to deploy in large numbers to check all areas for the whereabouts of the bank robbers. Hearing this, the trio of robbers make hasty plans to leave the Blake home and cross over the snowy mountain pass the next day. However, there is one problem. The robbers plan to take young David with them to show them the way. Panicked, Fred plans to sneak out of the cabin during the night and alert the police. In the morning, noticing Fred's absence, the robbers tie Elizabeth to a chair, grab David and leave the cabin wearing warm clothing and snow shoes. But the constant fighting between Charlie and Benjie threatens to lead to a shoot-out.

You Can't Ration Love

Because of the war, there …
Because of the war, there aren't enough men at Adams College for all the girls, but Betty (Betty Jane Rhodes as Betty Rhodes) has no difficulties as she has a monopoly on stud-athlete Pete (Bill Edwards). The other girls, particularly Marian (Marjorie Weaver), think this is unfair, so Marian institutes a system of rationing dates. Pete is rated as thirty points and Betty is furious as the other girls bypass the 4-F's and slide-rule geeks to save their ration points to date Pete. Betty drafts him for the Varsity Show, but when the pressure of preparing for the show hurts his studies, Marian volunteers to tutor him and has him all to herself. Scholarly John "Two-Point" Simpson (Johnny Johnston as Johnnie Johnston) auditions and, since he isn't hep to the jive, is laughed off the stage. Betty helps him and soon "Two-Point" is in the groove and makes a hit, and Betty discovers she is in love with him. The faculty cancels the date-rationing plan and Johnnie, whose point value has gone up, thinks Betty is the cause of the ruling and dates Marian for spite. Betty broods and knits booties for her sister's baby, but conveys the impression to Marian that she is to have a baby. Johnnie learns he is the "suspected" father and, thinking it is another of Betty's tricks, plans to leave school. The other girls, led by Bubbles (Marie Wilson), are worried about Betty's future stigma and round up a justice of the peace and Johnnie. Betty confesses the hoax, and the girls start squabbling over the available-again Johnnie, while Betty and Johnnie make use of the still-available Justice of the Peace.

Press agent Jimmy Gates gets an idea while watching a New York parade, for a returned war hero Sergeant Buzz McAllister, with his chief client, singer Judy Ames; Dona Drake, leader of an all-girl orchestra; his photographer Foggy, and his secretary Myrt. Jimmy, thinking Judy needs publicity in order to get a singing job on a radio program, thinks that a romance between her and the war hero would be just the ticket. Judy isn't too warm on the idea but agrees to go ahead for Jimmy's sake, with whom she thinks she is in love. She agrees to work on Buzz that night at the Manhattan Canteen, a converted night club where show business people entertain and wait on service men. Foggy is assigned to get pictures of Judy and Buzz together but fails through ineptness. Buzz escorts Judy home in a rainstorm and, while helping her out of the taxi, slips and falls into a deep puddle. Judy asks him to come in so she can dry his soaking-wet uniform on the kitchen stove. Foggy gains entrance to the apartment via the dumbwaiter and snaps a picture of Buzz in his underwear. The next morning Buzz tells Jimmy that he intends to marry Judy, which is going further than he had intended. He also decides he can't use the compromising - but innocent - photo for publicity purposes but does announce their - he thinks - publicity-only engagement. That clinches the deal for Judy to get a radio program called "The Girl I Left Behind." Buzz proposes to Judy, who realizes she loves Buzz and not Jimmy, and they, not knowing that Jimmy has announced their "engagement", decide to keep it a secret.
